tight budget, so only get 1gb ram.

no idea if the speed will be very slow....... vista will use up all the memory?

1 GB should be fine, so long as you don't play games or use some RAM intensive applications. I would advise 2 GB if you wish to play games, particularly on Windows Vista, but if all you do is surf the Internet, then using 1 GB will be no problem.

1gb will be ok - and 2gb will be the best experience.

Personally with home premium I've found that around 500-800megs are always in use. This is with Gaim (chat client) and IE open, and 4 widgets running in the sidebar. Vista uses around 550megs just to boot up and sit idly (that is after some tweaking and service revisions).

That's not to say its slow... I have 2gb of ram, but i've found that the more ram you let vista consume the faster it will run. With 1gb, you may look at using it's ReadyBoost technology to use a cheap flash drive as extra ram.

Overall, I still think you will find vista to be rather pleasing - even with 1gb of ram.

It should be fine for those uses, but eventually when possible, you should consider upgrading to 2gb of RAM.

One 1gb is technically ok, but for best performance it is better to have 2gb. But if you have 2gb, Vista will use even more ram compared to the 1gb so it could fully take advantage of your hardware.
