    Hi.

JkDefrag is supposedly one of the hdd defrag programs.

But i find when i have used it, my desktop icons take a lot longer to appear and the windows sound is broken and skips.

Also the time till i can access Vista seems longer, I use the default setting on JkDefragGUI

It`s as if Vista is having a harder time locating the data, when JkDefragGUI is supposed to organise it so it is easier and faster to access.

    So what is wrong?

    Thanks

    John.

    Two points:

One, defragging in general is pretty overrated in terms of performance gains. I've seen several studies that have indicated that it just isn't the panacea that most people want to think it is when it comes to performance. It's probably a plecebo more than anything else.

Two, no defragger should be breaking things. If your sound is "broken" after running the defragger, something is decidely wrong with what it is or isn't doing.

There isn't anything wrong with the defrag option in Vista. It's slow, but automated and reliable. What does it take to fix the broken sound?

    Hi.

I dont need to do anything to fix the broken sound, after using the notebook for a while and a couple of re-boots it`s fine again, Vista must have re-written the stratup files or whatever.

It just seems strange that a defrag that is supposed to make you notebooks data access more efficient , maybe it does overall, but it messes up the boot-up time.

    Regards

    John.

If Defragmentation was a Placebo effect then Flash memory and SSD's wont exist.

Heh, i'm glad someone besides me has noticed that JkDefrag is not all that it's hyped up to be. I've tried it out too on three different computers, and noticed the exact same thing, except the sound issue, on all of them.
Defragging them with a different defragger fixed the slowness that JkDefrag created.

Funny you mention that! Have been using Iobit's SmartDefrag for a long time, and have found that to be the best one from all the free ones out there. And it's now, finally, out of Beta too. Definitely give it a try, if you haven't already.

Funny, I have experienced no problems and/or glitches using JKDefrag, I think it works great.

I don't believe you fully understood the statement made by Nocturnal. If fragmentation was merely a myth, there would be no need for other media choices, since fragmented files would not be a factor in access speed. He wasn't saying that SSDs were not real or did not have definite advantages over conventional hard drives.

I can't say that I've had any problems with JKDefrag. I have not really compared it to anything else, though.

I'd use Auslogics Disk Defrag or one of those CMD commands.
