*gasp* I'm guessing this is something mods will not let you talk about here. That is unless you're talking about peer to peer between you and a friend transfering a work document. Anything copyrighted is illegal of course. And if it's you and a friend.. just make sure they clean their computer before they infect you by accident

All file sharing programs carry some risk--my advice would to be very careful with what you install and download. Make sure you run A/V and Anti-spyware. Bittorent usually offers faster speeds as well as greater safety.
Ultimately though, you're the last line of defense--be smart.
Just to let you know, illegal downloading is not allowed on this forum, so keep the discussion legal if you want to keep it open. -
no P2P is safe ever! noobs always try to put virus in files.
-
Limewire is #1 when it comes to fake files and viruses. Many times, you don't get what you want after hours of download time.
-
bittorent is much safer and faster! the Opera browser offers built-in torent support.

yeah dude limewire has tons of viruses...
anyone used azures before? (think i spelled it wrong)
I head it was pretty good.... -
Well, most of the viruses on Limewire come in the form of files less than a MB. Watch out for those as when I first used Limewire my AV program quarantined one or two before I learned.
-
I think using most any program such as limewire is playing with fire.
Eventually something bad will happen. :O -
Yeah the Gnutella network is plagued with viruses:
I discovered this while searching for some obscure thing; the virus spreaders are tracking all the searches made on the network (or the queries that reach their own clients at least)
I searched for this really oddball thing (not expecting any results), and there weren't any.. Then a couple minutes later, about 4 or 5 results came up with the title exactly like my search query, and boasting extremely fast download speeds. (they were all the same filesize, like <100kb; obviously virus) -
Never use P2P like Limewire. Things like that used to be pretty good, years ago, when they were not so flooded with dookie. Your best bet is to get AZ or uTorrent. Download those clients (AZ uses Java so it might be a little slower), then go to: www.torrentspy.com // or www.torrentz.com then search for what you want. Remember to download only legal things.

Just be careful with hat you download, and it can be safe.

Azureus is called Zudeo now. They changed their interface and everything. So now if you want the default interface, you have to enable the "Advanced" option to get the default Azureus interface. Somehow, I seemed to like Azureus better (or, the former version of Azureus to be easier for me, but I'm sure I'll get used to it)
And tips to avoid viruses:
1) Does teh file size make sense?
2) Follow your instinct - sometimes your gut feeling tells you that it is not what you are looking for
3) And yes, BT is so much more safer. I used to use Bearshare and got bombarded with viruses, malware, etc. It even wiped out Norton A/V -
or you could not use such programs/software at all.
If you really want something through one of these programs the the safest way is to find someone who already has it and download it through there computer to a removable drive, then scan the drive through their computer, then use your computer to scan the drive once or twice and then transfer the file to you computer.....or just leave it on the drive.
Bottom line is.......you are safer not using it.

I utorrent.....smaller and less resource hungry than azereus.
as for small files......i use Ares 2.01
basically i'll leave it to you like this.
Any peer to peer program is susceptible to infiltration...safest route is torrenting in my experience.
Now for Ares, Kazaa, Limewire, emule, bearshare, soulseek, and whatever...
[edited for language]
take ur pick.
have fun -
Limewire is safe as long as you know what your downloading .........
It doesn't take long to know the ... average file size, file extensions, ETC: ETC: AND to separate the fakes, viruses and Ad's.
If you use common sense you'll be OK. -
music from limewire SUCK, those ppl dont even know how to rip songs. the songs skips.
-
-
While since limewire causes my internet to stop working for long periods of time i'd say no it isn't
-
Its easy to tell that a Full song is not 1,897kb or has a .exe or non music format type of extension. Most songs are at least from 3,500kb to 9,000kb depending on the birate.
Or if your looking for a Vista Beta ISO. It's not going to be 300mb.
And of course stay under a firewall. and limit sharing to certain folders ... etc etc.
Even when using Torrents I always view the folders to see if the right files are loading.
There are also many other factors to easily avoid virus. -
-
thanks.....I'll remember that if I ever get around to getting limewire or a similar software.

Limewire (Other P2Ps are much better) can be a good source for limited licensed music like creativecommons, or unsigned artists who publish free versions. Just don't forget,...even the little guys could use a dollar. But take nothing for granted.. back up anything that's important and don't get mad when your hard drive implodes. -
Most P2P's are using the same Networks.
Limewire and other apps are more like Clients.
So any file that you download has nothing to do with any Limewire community. -
limewire not safe at all
