I don't know if this is the right spot for this question.

My daughter wants me to download skype so we can video conference with the grandchildren. Is it safe and how much memory would it use up? I have a brand new laptop and don't want to mess it up.

I've used skype to communicate with family across the country and overseas for a couple of years now. It doesn't take that much memory (25mb), but still I don't load it each time I use Windows. It also runs on my wife's Acer Aspire One (atom processor) so I don't think you should have much of a problem if you are using the computer in your signature.

    It's safe...

Although I've heard it has about a 73% chance of killing your cat.

A Skype trick for US subscribers with a Skype to US landline plan, while they are spending time overseas. If you first make a VPN connection that routes 100% of your TCP/IP traffic to a US based gateway and then place your Skype call to a US land line, Skype thinks the call is originating from the states. (Technically it is!) The call is then part of you Skype to US landline plan, and no per minute fees are charged.

I did this this past summer to call home from Amsterdam!

i believe that it is safe to install & use skype. i do have it installed and am using it for several years now (i cannot remember how long actually).

anyway, in some environments, skype is simply prohibited for security reasons (it was also in my previous job). some arguments are for example in following article:
    http://hackreport.net/2006/11/30/to-skype-or-not-to-skype-a-look-at-im-security/
however, the article above is quite old, too.
