To some of you this may be a stupid question, however i will ask anyway.
A few days ago, a friend of mine ran disk cleanup and gained an x amount of space back. According to him, 12GBs of it was his Hibernation file. I know what the hibernation file is/does but i thought i didnt take up more than the amount of ram in your laptop/desktop. Can someone please explain this? Or shoot it down with undeniable proof?

Your friend probably checked the hibernation file cache. Yes, the hibernation file does not take up more than the amount of ram you have in the system. The remaining 10 GB was probably gained from him clearing out shadow copies and system restore points.
-
Very possible if he also deleted his old sys restore files.
-
On that note, is shadow copy different than system restore? Because if they are the same thing then thats not it because he turned off system restore the day he got it, and hes only had the laptop for a month so would system restore take up that much space in that amount of time?
-
Shadow copy is different from system restore.
-
No, unless he has 12 GB of RAM.
Is This possible? I doubt it but...
