I have heard lots of bad things about Vista being 'bloated' and thus slow and unreliable . Is the Home Basic Version less 'bloated' ? Which version of Windows would you recommend in a new notebook?

Only moderators can do that. And don't worry, I took care of moving your thread to the Windows OS & Software forum.

Vista Basic is cut-down and is not worth buying in my opinion. If you are going to get Vista, then get Home Premium because it is much prettier and has more functionality. Performance won't be a problem if you have a dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM, I would not worry about that.

Vista Basic is essentially the same has Home Premium without MCE functionality. So unless you absolutely want MCE, go with Vista Basic and enable Aero with a simple registry switch.

I do admit, Premium does sound a lot better than Basic.
