I am going to clean install my notebook in few days and I was thinking of upgrading it to Ultimate. I have HomePremium now. Ultimate has more features, that made me wonder - would it run more unnecessary application in the background making it slower in comparision to Home Premium??? Only reason I am doing clean install is to improve speed and less applications running. The guys who have had experience with both - could you please share what your experience has had been?
Only reason for me to go for Ultimate is its disk image backup and restore option. Is it pretty efficient feature or there are better alternatives out there for this purpose??

No, it's the same OS, and therefore equally resource intensive. Unless ofcourse you're using DreamScene, that would be a bit heavy....
Also you should know that Ultimate doesn't really have much over Home Premium at all, unless you need the Business features.... -
But there's TEXAS HOLD'EM
-
Even same OS kernel, but...
more services running = more resources
By default, Ultimate uses more disk space and has more services running in the background.
Of course you can disable them manually later. -
lol Just download some third part Texas Hold 'Em game... I'm sure there are others out there!
-
Yeah its more resource intensive, but you could always tweak out the things you don't want. Then Ultimate is really nice to work with

CompletePC Backup is nice to have, and a major reason I would choose ultimate over home premium if given the choice.
But given that it's a steep upgrade price-wise, for many it might be better to install a 3rd party backup utility and save the money. -
I have Vista Ultimate, and I wish I would have just gotten Home Premium. I really don't feel that any of the "bonus" features with Ultimate are worth the extra cost. Most of the extra features can just be downloaded from 3rd party sources.

I have Ultimate. DreamScene is absolutely awesome for a few weeks, but after awhile I just went back to good old background images. DreamScene only takes up about 5-10% of my CPU to run, but I'd rather keep those 5-10% for other things.
Maybe in the future, when computers have WAY more processor/GPU cycles to spare, I'll run DreamScene more constantly.
That said, there are many very nice DreamScene files on Stardock's website. If you have Ultimate, you can download as many as you like. Some are pretty impressive.
As for performance, I wouldn't know, I've never used Home Premium. You could always disable the services later I suppose. -
I also recommend sticking with Home Premiumm. The only reason I have Ultimate is it came with my laptop. However, looking back I should have just forgotten the whole OS with laptop since I already had XP Pro and Vista Business from university; and Ubuntu.

Vista manages memories and resources well in all versions so it's a mute subject. Getting the Ultimate gives you more options and yes Texas Hold 'em is great. It does have more visual extras but if your laptop can handle it then it'll be no problem just be willing to lose some battery time. You can always choose the performance feature if you want to extend battery life. If you're plugged in and working then it doesn't matter.

This might be of help:

Yes it's a ultimate extra
Is Vista Ultimate more resource intensive than Home Premium?
