    Hello Guys,

Was just wondering if it was safe to clone your hdd to sdd using the samsung sdd software? I have a y510p and want to speed it up, but i don't want it to have issues after cloning. Like driver issues, or compatibility, or windows issues.

Will my computer function the same after cloning to sdd? I would think it would as none of the data is changing, just the storage device it's on will be.

Just new to the world of ssd and was hoping someone could clarify.

    Thanks everyone

    Joe

I personally didn't have any problems with the Samsung cloning tool, but members of the ArsTechnica forums have reported some issues with it. You could just go with Macrium Reflect and call it a day. Most of the time, cloning poses no issues. Personally, I'd take the opportunity to do a clean install free of any bloatware, but that's just me.

I stuck a Samsung 840 EVO into a little Ideapad S210 Touch a few months ago. I used the Samsung Data Migration tool and have had no problems whatsoever. Just had to reboot once and she has been running a treat ever since.

Did it do anything funny to the 100 MB boot partition?

I honestly don't know if it ever had one. It came with Win 8 and I immediately updated to Win 8.1 thru the MS Store. A couple of weeks after I decided to stick a Samsung in it.
Here's what it looks like now- disk man.PNG

Looks like it's normal and the partitions were copied over correctly. The complaints I've seen on Ars were about messing with the system reserved partitions, but it doesn't look to be the case here.

Over Provisioning is correct. If I recall, the Samsung Data Migration tool lets you choose how much. I just went with the default amount.
I apologize for not quoting you guys, as you can see I haven't posted enough to get familiar with how the forum works.

In addition to the three partitions shown in that screen dump, there is almost certain to be a 128MB Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition in between the EFI and Windows partitions. Disk Management hides it, but it should be visible in DISKPART (command prompt) or Minitool Partition Wizard.

Well IDK guys, I'm no whiz kid as has been pointed out to me before on this forum. DISKPART shows basically the same thing.
Let me make clear tho, this thing has never had a clean install. Lenovo had it on sale for cheap with Win 8, they wanted $50 more for the same thing with 8.1 so I went with the cheap deal and updated to 8.1 myself. diskpart.PNG

    Try LIST PARTITIONS in DISKPART.

(And don't let anybody tell you you're stupid, or whatever you were told. Should it happen on NBR, even if cleverly phrased, then please report it!)

While the machine will function, you're moving the install that was optimized for a spinning drive to a SSD.

Even with some tweaking the results are likely to be less than optimal in my experience.

I'd suggest a clean install - even if you have to start with W8 - and subsequently upgrade to 8.1

    My $0.02 only...

    Good luck.

Apparently running Windows Experience Index with the SSD tells Windows that it's now running on an SSD and will configure itself to optimize for its performance. No idea if that's true or not but doesn't hurt to try. Maybe also a before and after benchmark just to see if it makes any difference.

I can't say anything about W8/8.1 since I'm not using that OS, but it does not hold true for W7.

Haha, thanks Dannemand but the guy who said so wasn't really all that far off the mark. :D
Anyway, you are right about the partition.
