I read in an article online that Windows 8 can optimize an SSD using the disk defragmenter but doesn't actually defragment the ssd just optimizes it sort of like the ssd defragmenter such as perfect disk. is this true?

It can send a TRIM command to optimise the SSD drive. Can be set to daily as well if you want to schedule it.

Ah cr@p. It figures out that it is ssd and doesn't defragment. And perhaps triggers idle command so garbage collection built-in ssd would start working

I see, so the Disk Defragmenter in Windows 8 has actually improved it if it sable to defragment SSDs (well at least send TRIM Commands). I used to do that via a program called Tweak SSD

Yeah its called optimise drives I think now. It will figure out which is a SSD and just do SSD friendly stuff such as TRIM etc. You can see it say trim in the status when you press the optimise button.

Yes, it is called optimize drives and it does recognize that the drives are SSD, but 7 did recognize SSDs too, what it does that 7 didn't is allow you to choose when to send the TRIM command as DDDeniZZZ said.

On my Windows 7 drive, I use the Intel SSD toolbox, but you need an Intel SSD for that (obviously).
