Is it even worth the $17.00 in shipping for the free upgrade?

I am eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7. Since it is an upgrade, do I have to have Vista installed on my machine before installing Windows 7? That is my understanding. If I do have to have Vista installed, won't my computer be potententially slower than if I just had Vista installed?

We do basic things on the computer. Will we really notice a difference in an upgrade to Windwos 7?

You can still do a clean install--the disk just needs to detect a licensed copy of XP or Vista to use an upgrade version to install OS.

I think you will notice a difference between Vista and Win 7. $17 shipping? ouch, not much of a "free" upgrade.

Ask if they can link you to a digital download and give you the key.

If it needs to detect a licensed copy of Visa, doesnt' that mean I have to intall Vista first? Then install WIndows 7?

Am I getting wrong the definition of a clean install? I thought a clean install was installing Windows 7 by itself instead of piggybacked onto Vista.

I think if you have to ask yourself that question, then no. On the other hand you'll have an extra DVD lying around.

$17 is still a good price for Windows 7. You can always sell it on eBay for profit ;)

It doesn't need to detect a licensed copy of Vista. It needs to detect a licensed copy of XP or Vista. It's just that with XP, it's not going to do an in-place upgrade; it's going to wipe your old installation and clean-install.

No you can't. You only get one license between the Vista that came on the computer and the upgrade to 7.
