Is it ok to disable V-sync on a Laptop/LCD ? I know that they have a refresh rate of 60hz but will happen if I disable V-Sync? good or bad?

I know nVIDIA recommends disabling V-sync to fix stuttering issues with their current drivers until the next driver release which is supposed to be in June so this is why I want to have an expert answer with regards to V-sync on a laptop/LCD, how does it affect (positively or negatively)

Turning off vsync won't harm your laptop at all.

The benefit to vsync is that you won't get screen tearing (where the screen displays parts of two frames). Screen tearing is perfectly fine for the monitor, it can just look a little odd if someone has their torso split down the middle. You can also reduce GPU load if you're regularly above 60fps.

The downsides are to vsync are that it will only display in factors of your refresh rate. That means that if you can't display something at 60fps, then you'll instantly drop to 30, 20 or maybe even lower. Vsync can also introduce input lag.

If you regularly drop below 60fps then it's best to keep it off. If you're above 60fps most of the time then it's your call. This is all assuming you're playing games though. In most other scenarios it won't make a difference what you set it to.

    thanks for the detailed explanation.

I don't play games, I just want it for watching movies using SVP (Smooth Video Project) + MPC-HC + LAV + madVR which gives me super smooth 60 FPS video

Where exactly are you thinking of turning off VSync? In the Nvidia Control Panel?

So, are you experiencing stuttering at the moment with madVR? If so, have you changed/disabled any madVR settings?

You didn't mention if you changed any settings.

I think you can try the following: make sure that Fullscreen Exclusive mode is enabled and try disable the present frames in advance option.

Rendering-> General Settings-> Enable automatic fullscreen exclusive mode (it is enabled by default)

It depends, but some people in the madVR doom9 thread found that it was possible to get rid of some stuttering by disabling it.
