I want to run my notebook on the portable/laptop power scheme when running on the battery, and want it to run as home/office desk power scheme when on AC power. Is it possible to change the settings so that when plugged in I don't have to change it back to Home/office desk and then change it again manually back to portable/laptop when on battery? Do I have to get a program that can automatically do this? I want my processor to actually run at it's real speed when on AC, when on portable/laptop it will only run at about 800MHz.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Notebook Hardware Control can do it. Do you want your CPU to be hard limited to 800MHz when on battery, even when you do intensive tasks?

Just use the 'Always On' profile, and adjust the screen shut off, HD spindown etc. to the times you'd like.

I want the processor to run at 1.73GHz when on ac, and 800MHz when battery, the most i really ever do on battery is get on the internet using firefox browser, or listen to music on itunes.
does 'always on' automatically change it like this?

You can download Notebook Hardware control and set it to manage your power settings. It works great. Install .NET framework 2.0 and NHC and enjoy the one of the best programs ever for Centrino platform. (that is if you have a centrino notebook). NHC can work with WIndows power profiles or simply overtake the control and do its job. :)

    Hope it helps.

Then your best bet is leaving it at Portable/Laptop all the time, whether on AC or battery. This way it will idle at 800MHz and only boost to 1.73MHz when it is needed. You won't lose in performance, and as you say that you never do intensive tasks on battery, you won't lose in battery life as well, because the CPU will never have reasons to jump to its max speed.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try the program to see if I like it. If not I guess I'll just leave it at Portable/Laptop.
Edit: I do have a Centrino platform

    Jesusfrk611, perfect.

You'll like this program I guarantee it.

It's very simply laid out, and the new NHC has some new features that are great.

Best part is, it's free. :)

NHC does it well. Windows power scheme is Always On in my laptop. Dynamic switching is set up on AC (changes to 1.73Ghz when needed and throttles back to 800 Mhz when not) and Max Battery (800Mhz all the time) with NHC. You can set Max Performance on NHC when AC to please your need.
