Suppose your new machine with 100GB HDD comes with Vista, and you have the 40GB HDD with XP from another machine (of the same model). You want to downgrade new machine to XP, using its own 100GB HDD (i.e. not simply replacing it with the 40GB HDD). Is that possible? Perhaps very complicated?

Yes, just clone the 40GB HDD to your 100GB HDD and you're done.
