Lost that race to drumfu by seconds ....... -
Yes it is possible, but M$ has not made it easy.
Here is how you do it:
Click Start, Run and then enter this command
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Poof. Messenger goes bye, bye. Its uninstalled.
Edit - daacon beat me to it bye one minute. -
it seems that there are two MSN Messengers installed in Windows XP. the first you can remove easily using the remove windows component option as drumfu mentioned. but you will note that there is another one embedded under the Messenger subdirectory of the Program Files directory. this one is pernicious and could not be uninstalled except through radical means, that is, use an uninstaller utility like the one of System Mechanic Pro 6. you can then manually uninstall it using the option "Uninstall application by main application folder" and checking all options that are under it. i am sure other uninstall utilities have similar options.
however, when you do an update using the windows update utility it would detect the absence of the msn messenger and recommed as an option the downlaoding of MSN 4.7 messenger. you can then opt to turn off this particular software component reminder.
when you want to install the latest msn messenger just download directly the latest version from http://messenger.msn.com. -
on our work computer we just deleted the folder. the icon does not pop up in the system tray anymore.

RogueMonk has the technique down that I'd recommend as well.
