After doing an in-place upgrade or repair of windows Vista, there are couple of huge, hidden folders with discarded files from the upgrade / repair process.

    $WINDOWS.~Q or $INPLACE.~TR

Is it ok to delete these? This can be seen usually during disk clean up and there is an option to select this for deleting.. also some times they say CCleaner deletes them (though it did not this time around when I ran CCleaner)...

Anyways, I checked in google and they said its safe to delete if there are not files missing from the upgrade process... How will I know if any files are missing from that process? Second, I did this inplace repair nearly 2 or 3 weeks back and have had no problems since. No files are missing or at least nothing that I see... also I have a backup of all data as well as complete PC backup done regularly...

So do the experts think I can go ahead and delete this? They occupy nearly 1.2 Gigs...

    THanks for any suggestions.

The mentioned files are left over from windows upgrade and safe to be deleted. I would use windows built-in Disk Cleanup utilties with "Files discarded by Windows upgrade" option checked. This should clear them up for you nicely

    cheers ...

Thanks mate.. yes, I saw it in the windows built-in disk cleanup utility.. I wasn't sure if I can go ahead and delete it.

I read some articles on the Microsoft Knowledge base regarding this and there were like confusing statements like "you can delete if you are sure you aren't missing any files" or similar...

I wasn't sure if I was missing anything (though from the time I did the in-place upgrade / repair, I have absolutely no problem at all, in fact, it only cleaned up the system restore point issue I had)..

Anyways... I think I will wait another week and then clean it up during the next weekend maintenance schedule that I follow.. thanks again, buddy :)

    Cheers.
