Hi guys, I was wondering with the introduction of the gold version of SP1 for vista do you think its a major improvment or would it be better to stick to xp Sp3. What are you personal experences and have you noticed good or bad =)

I have yet to have one problem wth Vista, I don't see all the hate people have towards it. Then again I never tried running it with a crap-box.

Everytime I touch an XP machine at work I feel like I'm using an ancient computer.

IMO, I think your good to try it with SP1, only way to find out is to give it a whirl.

As of today, I would take XP or Vista as completely equal.

i dual boot with vista64/xp. i have to say i use the vista alot more often. 90 percent of the time i use xp it's because i'm playing supreme commander because it doesn't play as well on vista.

    some of the programs i run for college where made for windows 2000 so compatability wise XP works while vista dosnt... every single time i run it i have to unload and delete and reload dlls.. which gets troublesome after the 50th or so.. I would dualboot but lack of external space kills me x.x;;

So i was wondering does anyone else experence the unloading dlls..

Just make sure you have at least 2GB of RAM if you want decent performance.

I don't think microsoft will put much effort to try and fix that, it should be the program vendors the ones that release an update to make their programs compatible with vista. If SP1 did fix that, then microsoft should be praised for going beyond what they should have done.

Anyways, what programs are we talking about? If there is no fix for them yet, there may be subtitutes that do work with Vista

yes i'd say 1.5-2gb are minimum requirements if you want to run vista smoothly.

Stay away from Vista! Be afraid, be VERY afraid 'cause lots of XP users will pounce you for using it and won't listen to reasons!

Ain't it the truth. XP disciples are getting as bad as Apple Fanbois in their freakish hate for Vista.

To the OP...unless you have some specific piece of hardware or software that in incompatible with Vista, there is no reason to avoid it. There really wasn't any reason to avoid it prior to SP1. I've been running it on my primary desktop since April 2007, and it's been the most reliable OS I've ever used. In fact, the 13 months since I built this machine with Vista is the longest I've ever gone without feeling the need to reformat and start over. And I install loads of garbage all the time.

That said, everyone should feel free run the OS that they choose. If they choose XP because that's their preference, that's fine. But don't choose XP because you think Vista is a disaster, because it isn't. At least not outside of the blogoshpere and message forums.

Call me old school, but I much prefer old XP. I have to use Vista now and again, but I find it a lot easier to do things in XP; no nag screens at every turn. I'm sure there's a way to disable those, but why bother in my case. I'm not seeing such an advantage to moving to Vista even with my free upgrade cd, but ymmv.

well my major turnoffs with vista was with the lack of support for some of my programs, and the wireless controler was garbage.. has it changed ?
the programs I use are specfic to anyalzing archeological surveys.. so yeah x.x kinda stuck with them for now

I can't say about your programs obviously. What was your issue with the wireless? I don't think there's anything about Vista itself that prohibits a qualty wireless experience. If it was crappy drivers for your particular wireless card, you might check to see if they've been updated.

An aside...it seems to me that a lot of people (not you, necessarily) lay the blame on Vista for lousy driver support from various hardware vendors. Vista was in development for what...five years? There was no excuse for hardware manufacturers (I'm talking to you, nvidia) to have been so unprepared for its launch.

You probably already did this, but did you try running it in compatibility mode for XP under Vista? Start a thread and maybe we can lend you a hand

no i did not. i forgot exactly, but i am taking about a 3-15 fps loss throughout a campaign. it's still playable except at the end. on xp, towards the end of a campaign i'm usually @ about 20 fps average. with vista it was 12-15 fps. the game is still playable @ about 17 fps but when it dips below that sometimes it stutters.

+1 for XP gaming. Vista gaming in general will always be slower. But Microsoft already knew that when they made changes to the display driver model.

Yes, try the compatibility mode and see if that works for you. Other than that, I would highly recommend Vista.

I heard from a friend who heard from a friend who heard from a friend that lives in USA thru MSN that Vista sucks and will consume your soul if you insta~ NO. Vista is safe, I've never been happier with an OS.

Another option that has not been mentioned is to install Vista, then you can install either VMware of Virtual PC, then install XP inside of that for the programs you need to run in XP. Heck, you can even install Windows 2000 in the virtual machine and it will run just fine.

Just don't try to run games in the virtual machine, it's not good for that.

VMWare Server is free, as is VirtualPC from Microsoft.

You prefer XP because you've been using it forever and that;s what you're used to. Humans don't like change, and are naturally drawn to stick with the same thing they always do. If you spent some real time using Vista, you'd get used to the changes and then XP would seem odd.

Agreed, people are resistant to change. The moment they see something wrong with a new OS, they will criticise it straight away.
