I've just ordered a Dell Vostro 1500. It comes with Vista, but I'm considering installing XP x64 Professional Edition on it instead. What do people think of this?

    Thanks in advance.

No...XP-64 has known compatibility issues as driver support was never really there.

Keep Vista or install 32-bit XP.

    64-bit XP has many issues.

If you can get it to work properly I have found xp 64 bit to be the best OS from microsoft. Just my opinion on use, it was the fastest and most stable version of windows I have used in a long time. Eventually the gaming compatibility caught up with me and I had to let it go.

I would go for 64bit Vista instead.

Indeed. I've found Vista x64 to by extremely stable and also quite fast. Plus, unlike XP x64 there are very few driver compatibility issues, because generally if a hardware manufacturer creates a driver for the 32 bit version of Vista they will also make one for the 64 bit version. It seems to be a very good operating system, and I have no problems recommending that you install Vista x64.

How do you know if the hardware of your computer can support x64 or not? Could my FZ (see specifications in signature) handle Vista Ultimate x64? Does Vista Ultimate come in 32-bit and x64?

    Thanks in advance for responses.

It would probably be best to contact Sony and see if they do offer drivers for Vista x64, because I'm not really sure. Although, its also quite possible that Vista x64 would natively support your hardware with no drivers at all.

Vista64 user here, and it's okay, but I've got a couple of problems with it:
    1) No VPN client software for any 64-bit OS's from most VPN providers...
    2) My ssh client (PuTTy) disconnects all the time.
    3) Firefox seems rather glitchy on vista64 as well.

Will be installing XP next week. :p

I think I'll do as someone above suggested and go back to XP 32-bit. Vista x64 will be too resource hungry methinks.

Thanks for all of the responses, guys.

seeing as though vostro is a business computer im sure dell supports x64, i just ordered one and stumbled upon this thread

heres there driver support page for vostro, drop down to xp x64, its there, all thats missing is a video driver, which there are tons of better than oem drivers for the geforce 8400 and 8600

i am thinking the worst problem you might have is installing xp x64, but nothing a little modification in nlite cant handle, just make sure you have your retail xp x64 disc, a copy of nlite, and track down the sata drivers, im sure they are there because mine is coming installed factory with xp home 32 bit, i rather run xp x64 pro, and if your manufacturer supports it, definitely the way to go. i run it on both my desktops, e6600 on asus and a opteron on a dfi... just my 2 cents, correct me if im wrong everybody...

Why didn't you just order it with XP?

    I'm confused by this.

I just got my Vostro 1500 tonight, but I did not get all the drivers installed. No problem installing XP x64, but the drivers are giving me a slight problem. Nothing major at all though. The video driver came from laptopvideo2go, the audio came right off the resource CD that came from Dell, same with the wireless driver. The problem right now is the 8 in 1 media reader, the dial up modem, and the NIC. I will update tomorrow when I have more time, but I hope this info helps some one? Its pretty quick, but I installed 2 GB of GeiL PC6400. Any recommendations or comments would be appreciated.

windows xp x64 is good to go, all drivers are installed. running like a champ, hope some one got some use of this thread.... alright im not expert but xp x64 is definitely an awesome alternative to the expense of vista 64, and if you dont really use linux (i have no experience on it really except with ubuntu) than this might be the way to go. alright everybody be good!
