I once tried swapping my browser for Opera (about 2 years ago) but seemed to have endless problems - it would let me visit certain sites, i couldn't download files, websites didn't look as good.

Do these type of problems still exist with Mozilla (and Opera). The threats with IE worry me, but in my experience it does the browsing job best.

Perhaps the alternatives are now as good as IE and someone will tell me so.

    Thanks

have u tried firefox? of the websites i frequent, i have yet to find one that isn't compatible. i also have no crashing problems, etc.

also, it's not that opera, firefox, or IE are 'better' than one another. it's that mozilla based browsers don't use active X which is a major backdoor for spyware. hence, IE is open to attack easier than opera or firefox.

Yea, there are not too many sites that require IE, but for the few that do, it is not like you have to "uninstall" IE to use Firefox (hah, like MS would even let you).

IMO, it is vastly superior to IE for a few reasons:
    - Security (although, to be fair, SP2 plugged a lot of holes, and no browser in the world will protect you from doing dumb things like running unknown .exe's)
    - Tabbed browsing (best thing since sliced bread...no more multiple windows)
    - Adblocking (essential!! Get the adblock esxtension for Firefox ...you can rightclick on ads - even flashbased ones - and block that server from showing them...browsing without ads is sooooo much nicer)

Those are the big differences imo...just try it out, no permanent damage done.

EDIT: Added link to adblock extension

Firefox is definitely better than IE. In like every possible way, it follows web standards (W3C), tons of plugins that make surfing around easier and better. The mini search bar that you can search up dictionary.com/google.ca or practically anything you want. Those rare IE specific sites, I just use the "Open in IE extension" and everything is fine and I only rarely even touch IE except for Windows Update.

there is no best browser, they are using flash to popup firefox now. I use Maxthon, Opera, Firefox all at the same time. Opera is still the fastest, try 8.0 out it. Maxthon is also very nice, extremely feature rich, it uses IEs engine so you won't get any compatiblity problems compared when using Firefox or Opera.

No doubt about it. Firefox is the superior browser.

    Essensial extensions:

Adblock (make sure you look up how to configure it correctly. Also, add */ad/* and */ads/* to your blocked objects.)

    IEview
    Customize Google
    All-In-One Gestures
    ForecastFox
    Tabbrowser Preferences

Firefox is useful when toggling between sites. That is a major difference regarding browsing that seems to be very helpful. You should at least try it for a month to give it a full test with your browsing habits. I only use IE with certain websites that do not seem to work or are supported through Firefox. Firefox is my browser 95% of the time.

I like Forecast fox, Cookie culler and advanced tab browser preferences.

No script is very good too.

Firefox is safer than Internet Explorer because most of the junk software is written for it. As Firefox becomes more popular I would expect this to change.
