As 'jeremysdad' said YMMV. I used to separate the OS and DATA onto two partitions but haven't for a couple of years now. I back up the whole drive regularly to two different external HD's so I don't worry about data loss and restore is very quick on a Windows 7 system.
The issue is this. Every program you install, by default, will want to install on your C: drive and most will want to save the data the program creates on C: as well. If you don't pay close attention to program installation and data storage you eventually will end up with data and programs mixed between two partitions which will cause more grief than just using one partition for both the OS and data.
If you are a person with a type 'B' personality who has the patience to keep your programs, data and OS ordered by partition you may reap some benefit (I didn't find any) but for me it was more fustrating than functional.
Is the hard drive for my Dell Notebook configured properly?
