I'll try that, but iolo's SM7 tried to open system restore and couldn't. I think I'm screwed.

    But I'll try.

    Thanks

ERD Commander is probably the most well-known utility to have for all Windows since it is official and just got bought out by Microsoft.

Having just installed and never used ERD, how do I tell it to go to a specific restore point?

    All I have is

    erd50
    eula
    license
    MSDaRT
    relnotes

Is it possible that since I don't have helpctr.exe and it seems rstrui as nothing happens when I click it, that something wasn't installed?

ERD commander is a tool that is ran on a bootable CD.

Do you mean that I would have needed to have a boot disc or just the xp disc.

And having the XP disc [if that's what I can use], what do I do?

If you want a complete backup and restore (though thats probably not what you are looking for) I recommend Norton ghost
