There were many guides for XP and Vista about what to disable that was running in the background to make the computer run faster and have better performance...
one of the big ones I remember was playing with the paging file of allocated ram, as well as disabling the indexing of the hard drive, so it would empehsis performance over searching faster.
I just wonder if anyone knows some tips on how to tweak win 7 for highest performance, quickest boots...
what UI elements should I disable?
I remember in vista, disabling start up sound, desktop wallpaper and screensaver all helped to make the computer become functional faster.. disabling programs by ctrl+alt+delete also helped a ton, as well as disabling anti virus programs when gaming.

I'm in the "don't tweak you are crippling your OS camp" when it comes to Vista and especially Windows 7. I remember tweaking XP pro and getting very noticeable performance improvements--not so with Vista and Win 7, only problems. Windows 7 and Vista are more sophisticated OS's than XP in that they are self tweaking to a certain extent, you never know when those disabled features are going to be a problem.
If you don't like the GUI enhancements in Windows 7 and prefer the instantaneous style of XP then go control panel>ease of access center>make it easier to focus on tasks>check the box turn off all unnecessary animations (whenever possible). -
So what performance problems are you actually having on this install? How did you measure it? What was your control?
Before you answer any of this, it really sounds like you're hunting for a problem. -
Don't "tweak" your OS. Any serious technical person will tell you that it's not worth it. -
I was just wondering if there were any tips to make Win 7 run as fast as possible. I just assumed that Microsoft made Win 7 to supplement casual users the best, were gamers like myself who just want the hardcore performance and less of 60-70 programs running in the background(that was the case with vista) would need to tweak it a bit to get the good gaming setup!?
So far it seems good, but quite different.. this is more than a little visual upgrade from vista. :O -
Windows Vista and XP, I do tweak them a lot. I find no problem tweaking with XP and Vista. But Windows 7 is very good already that no need to be tweaked. In addition, tweaking can lead to instability for Windows 7. -

For me do not use win7 unless you have 4gb ram, and if you have that win7 runs smooth and fast.
I would not bother with 32bit win7 if i was you, if you have less than 4gb ram stay with xp.
This is the best solution. -

Take the advice or leave it. -
However, I just tested Windows 7 x86 on a Pentium Dual-Core T2130 with 1GB of RAM. It ran smooth - arguably better than XP did. -

W7 on 2GB RAM -> Like a charm.

It's only been out for a day and a half; relax.
Just get an SSD and you won't need any tweaking. -
Actully, i find Wind7 uses much less processes at boot than Vista. I only use ccleaner and a freee defrag software. not really sure what else i can "tweak"
-
To add onto that, I have W7 installed on an old Dell Laptop with a single core Celeron processor and 1GB of RAM; it runs fine with Aero and a Autocad running/rendering...

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with 2 GB and it's been smooth sailing. Huge improvement over Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Right now, with the apps I'm running and stuff installed, I have 49 processes running. When I had a clean install, I was looking at less than 40, around like 35, but can't remember exactly.

the tweaks for vista removed all of the excess network computer processes and assumed you were using the computer as a personal stand-alone computer. i like vista after i tweaked the mess out of it because i don't use it on a network. i'm sure tweak guides for w7 will be out soon. i'm looking forward to upgrading my main desktop for a new look.
