I carry my notebook around many places like library and study halls and classrooms, and it usually goes to sleep mode after a while when untouched. Problem is when I login, it plays that bell sound that sometimes startle people around me. Even worse is the longer sound of when vista starts up, just before login screen appears. Now, I dont have a physical volume swtich on the notebook that I could use to lower the volume. Volume controls are all 'soft'. Is there a way to automatically mute the volume when notebook goes to sleep or hibernate mode or shuts down?? Somebody suggested me use Sound item in control panel to remove undesired sounds, but I couldnt find option for windows startup sound in that. Can someone help??

Just turn the system sounds OFF in the control panel. Fixed.

Just make sure to mute your notebook the time you use it before going to a quiet place. Or plug in headphones or something.

ei. if the Startup sound annoys you, you can uncheck the box "play windows startup sound" in the Sounds TAB. Then lower down the master volume as well.
To your second question, its a visual style. just check this link. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=104877.

You can custom mute the sounds you want in Windows through the Sound panel. I personally disabled the startup and log in sound.

I just turn my sound off with the button and it seems to stay off through reboots.
Is there a way to auto-mute vista when loggin in??
