or a DVD or something? Most viruses and adware disables system restore which destroys all previous restore points, then re enables it after the malware is downloaded, making it useless. I'm on XP btw.

No, because SR only saves system settings and certain files. It does not preserve the whole system. As a complete backup solution, consider using Acronis TrueImage; it will clone your hard drive and make an image file that you can store on an external for future use if your system ever gets compromised.

A full copy would take tons of time and many gbs of space though right? Is there any way to get it to fit on a disk? Maybe just back up the system registry files, and restore to those settings?

I would say if you want it on a CD use Norton Ghost v14. I have only used a little of that program. But you can save on a CD or DVD.
But this isn't for free.
There maybe a Trial -
the ghost file is small but it's not that small. i think it's like 10 gigs or something. least that is what i remember from an older version of ghost i used.

I use Acronis 11 and burn my complete backups to DVDs. I also save the image on a storage drive.
Less than 4.4 GB is the maximum for a full DVD with Acronis, I use 4.3 GB for the maximum setting in Acronis.
Acronis compresses when creating an image, it doesn't image the Page file and probably not the hibernate file.
Pro went on one DVD at 3.9 GB, this was approximately 6 GB of data not counting the above files.
Premium took two DVDs. 4.3 GB + 2.8 GB = 6.8 GB, this was approximately 13 GB of data.
Ultimate clean install but before my personal programs, went on 1 DVD at 4.12 GB, I don't have an approximate data size as there have been too many additions since backing up to DVD.
I think that some things compress at different rates such as compressed files and etc.?
After burning to DVDs be sure to verify the image on the DVD with Acronis.
Is there a way to create a system restore point on a CD?
