So I can place the gadgets wherever?

1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
2. In the left pane, click on to expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and Desktop Gadgets.
3. In the right pane, right click on Turn off desktop gadgets and click on Edit.
4. To Enable Gadgets -
A) Select (dot) either Not Configured or Disabled.
B) Go to step 6.
5. To Disable Gadgets -
A) Select (dot) Enabled.
6. Click on OK
7. Close the Local Group Policy Editor window.
8. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to completely apply.

I don't think so.. I think its just the way it was made and if anything its hardcoded. -
In Windows 7 you can move them anywhere you want on the desktop. There is nothing special you have to do. Just drag them where you want them and drop.

It only snaps when you put them on edges, what's so bad about that?

Well, I tried dragging them all over my desktop and they didn't snap anywhere. Including the edges or by other gadgets. Oh well.
Maybe my Jedi powers are interfering with the snapping. -

This is a reply to an old thread, but holding down SHIFT only allows you to freely position the gadgets until the next time the machine is restarted. Upon restart, the gadgets are snapped to the nearest location. This is a huge disappointment, as I'd like one of my gadgets to be AT the bottom fo the screen, not .5" away from it.
Is there a way to disable the "snapping" for desktop gadgets?
