Every time I go to restart, or shut down my T61, I have to do a few up grades. First off, what is it upgrading, second, can I skip it?

what operating system are you using?
if it's vista, then you probably can't skip the upgrades unless you uninstall the updates.
did you download any updates lately?

It`s probably the WU message thing.
It`s harmless and quite recommended. Sure, it does take a little longer to close the thing, but it`s better to update.

You can set it so it notifies you and asks your permission to install the update. But there's nothing wrong with it doing that.

It's just Windows updates. You can set it so that it won't download them unless you tell it to.
