It seems like installation starts the moment you double click the installer even before getting through the usual formalities like EULA acceptance, and doesn't stop even if you hit the X.

Which version of Office are we talking about? I do know that in install it will ask for the key and after starting Office will ask to activate online or phone I forgot....that install process is a big file and the X won't stop til it start loading then it will balk and ask if your want to stop. It takes Office fresh install some time to start the install process and once it starts it a big install process...

Office 2013 Professional Plus using the web installer.

I was never asked for a product key (I'm guessing the web installer is customized for each customer?), nor was I ever asked to activate (this seems to be automatic/mandatory/forced during the installation process), nor at any point was I allowed to stop (Office continued to spend the next 15 minutes or so downloading and installing in the background even after I hit the X), unless if by "loading" you mean "fully installed and ready to use"...

I'm sure that if I were to kill the process via the Task Manager I could have aborted the installation, but that's rather drastic and definitely not the canonical way to cancel the installation.

the "web installer" was either downloading and/or unpacking. no software starts installing without at least allowing you to choose the install directory, nor does a product like office automatically install the entire suite without letting you choose what you may or may not need.

Webinstaller for Office 2013 from what I know of "PLUS" it came either as a dvd or downloaded massive file I haven't heard of Office 2013 Plus as webinstaller that in itself is a problematic installer to start. Just think your looking at least 600MB install over the internet no wonder your bandwidth slows to a crawl. And there in no such thing that I recall for Office 2013 Plus being made Web installer as your asking if so could you show us where? Only other installer is Office 365 web installer and that is the closet thing to what your taking about. So until we get some more details what your asking sounds alot more like Office 365 Web installer and Office 2013 Plus comes in dvd or file download nothing related to what you mentioned so far. And I know I have Office 2013 Plus DVD and the downloaded file and dvd install when installing is not a quick install.

When the installer finally quit after ~15 minutes, I got a balloon popup notification in the system tray telling me that Office was now installed and ready to use. And sure enough, when I fired up Word, it launched in less than a second and then asked me if I wanted to accept the EULA and send collection data to Microsoft, etc.

This is easily the most unusual installer I have ever used and completely different from my previous experiences with installing Office 2007 and 2010.

It took longer to install Office than it did to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. As Windows 8.1 was a ~3.5 GB download and I'm on a 75 Mbit connection, I'm guessing it's a lot more than 600 MB.

I got Office from here: Microsoft Home Use Program - Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013. The software suite includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access and more!

All I got to say is any kinda of large program install like the Office your doing - I either get the DVD disc or download the complete installer file to install later. Broadband is fast but when the file is big like 600MB or more to webinstall this isn't a walk in the park when you do it.

The problem isn't so much the installation itself as I can always go away and do something else, it's the inability to cancel that really bugs me. Besides, on-demand web installation seems to be the direction that Microsoft wants to move towards, even if they have to drag their users kicking and screaming (which seems to be a favorite strategy of Microsoft's as of late, but I digress) - the kinds of hoops that users have to jump through just in order to get an offline installer for Windows 8.1 is pretty maddening.
