When im at home, i'm behind my routers firewell. But im going to be traveling for the next 2 months and just connecting wirelessly (or through cable) to whatever i can find- public and hotel stuff. You guys think windows firewall is good enough? or should i get something better?
I you think i need somehting else... im really cautions about what i install on my computers. Is there anything Very Low Impact, small simple not a rescource hog and no bloatware?
Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would recommend a different firewall. I personally use NetVeda's SafetyNet.

I'll second Zone Alarm. The free version is kind of lacking in configuration options, but it's been working well for me for a while now.

The windows firewall is okay but it doesn't block traffic going out from your laptop. So I use Zone Alarm. I like it.

If you don't care which programs are calling home, then Window Firewall is fine. If you want to stay on top of which programs are sending information out to the internet then I suggest gettting a third-party firewall. I have personally used Sygate Personal Firewall for a while. I have tried ZoneAlarm, only to come back to Sygate. Simplicity and ease of control is how I describe Sygate.

I use zonealarm but thats because its the best free firewall. If you wanna spend some money on your firewall I would say go for McAfee or some other good ones.

Does zone alarm leave a real big footprint? what about Sygate Personal Firewall?

or i guess the better question is which of the 2 leaves a smaller footprint?

    Edit to add:
Ive been googling around a bit, and it seems a lot of places claim that zone alarm uses up quite a bit of rescources. ... at least when compared to Kerio or the NetVeda ive been looking into.
Zazone whats your take on the NetVedas rescource usage?
Anyone else currently using either Kerio or NetVeda?

    Thanks Guys

I find SafetyNet has less issues than ZoneAlarm.

I let my 2 hardware firewalls handle it and don't worry.

    Windows Firewall only.

Zone Alarm - Definitely thumbs up. I used to use it but it doesnt allow "My Safe", an application that came with my Sony and one that I use often...so I uninstalled it.

It seems like most people here like ZA. its just that i hear from other places that it uses quite a bit of memory and such. What version of ZA are all of you running? Anyone recommend a past release of ZA over the most current?

I'm running the most current version of ZA. Compared to the McAfee firewall (which I was running previously as part of their security suite), it takes up WAY fewer resources. My system boots up many times faster with ZA and a free antivirus program than it did with the single McAfee program.

One of the recent Microsoft critical updates had issues with Kerio Personal Firewall; to the point of breaking basic browser functionality (on all browsers, not just IE). Not that I wouldn't recommend it, but is nice to know.

I used ZA in the past and loved it. used the free for two years and bought and used Pro for 4 more years.
I stopped using it about 3 years ago after getting a decent hardware firewall.
As such, I'm not familiar with the current iteration of the software.
If I were to use it again, I would get just the basic (free) version, not the one with all the extra AV/spyware/IM/etc. stuff.
