I know that this is an old thread, however, I am running in to a similar problem. On my Dell E1705, the volume control is giving me problems. When I turn the volume down, it automatically moves all the way back up a few seconds later. I have tried re-installing the driver and this did nothing. Also, it doesn't happen when I'm using external speakers, only when I use my system speakers. This is a new problem, as the system is 1.5 years old. I recently had a Dell tech replace my video card and LCD and am wondering if the volume up button isn't stuck down somewhere?? However, I don't believe the problem would go away when using other speakers if this is the case. Any ideas? Thanks!

Just a thought, but how close is the built in speaker to the volume button? Maybe it IS partially stuck and the vibration of the speaker is affecting the button. That is the only way I could explain the difference between the intrernal and external speakers. Try this using the internal speakers, turn the volume all the way down to ZERO. See if it creeps back up. Then turn it up one notch and watch again. Repeat this and see if there is some "magic" volume where it then has a mind of its own.

Thanks for the info. When I first encountered the problem, I did try this, and in fact, even from zero or mute, I could watch the volume bar creep all the way back up.

As quickly as the problem appeared, it seems to have gone. While home on lunch break the problem vanished. If it happens again I will post back and if anyone else has any ideas I would appreciate them. Thanks!
