Ooh I'm having such fun today with my dual boot of xp and vista, I solve one problem and another arises...
I want to use Gparted livecd to resize my partitions as I have 5.8gb spare space now, but I can't get the livecd to work.
It starts to work but then just stops at io scheduler cfg registered.
I can't even get into the main app.
Please can someone advise me on what's wrong with my cd - I burnt it from the ISO you can download from sourceforge using alcohol 120% - I didn't change any settings in alcohol 120% as I assumed you just need to burn the ISO straight to a CD...
Thanks in advance for any help/advice![]()

Stupid question, but did you check to see if the cd is clean? Try rubbing it on your shirt softy and/or checking the tray for dust.

Did you read the whole screen? Whenever Gparted has issues loading for me it will tell some where on the screen what the error is and how to "force" load what seems to not be loading. Usually it will be something like typing "Force Video 1024x768". What you need to type can change depending what isn't loading (assuming that is the problem you're having). Read the whole screen and see if you can find any notation like that.
-
Well I would read the whole screen if it didn't shift the text halfway across the screen...
I used the pause button to see what it was saying while the text was readable and the only thing of note that made any sense to me was that cpu0 is not a valid intel processor or something to that effect - my cpu is an AMD Turion, would that be the cause of the problem?
Other than that I couldn't see anything saying something wasn't being loaded or anything saying error... -
As far as I know Gparted works with AMD. I wish I could help more, but I've never had a problem without the program telling me how to fix it.
Did you run a checksum to make sure the download was good? Do that, and try a different version or Gparted if you still have trouble... Worth a shot. -
Download another version(an older one if you have the newest one and that doesn't work) and burn that to CD. The same thing has happened to me.
When i got my HP laptop and wanted to resize the partitions on it, then the GParted version i already had burnt didn't finish loading either, but it worked perfectly on my desktop. I downloaded another version and that worked perfectly on my laptop.
A few months later my brother bought a laptop(Acer) and wanted me to join the partitions on the HDD into one partition, but none of the GParted version i had worked on that laptop - so, familiar with the problem, i downloaded a version that i didn't have yet, and it worked perfectly.
I don't know what causes some versions of GParted not to work on some computers, but that's the way it seems to be. -
Well I've tried other versions 4 in fact and none of them seem to work, I've had a look around and it seems it may possibly be related to acpi or the fact I have usb devices still plugged in (i.e. the webcam that's built in to my acer).
I just oon't know how to disable them as the BIOS only has very limited basic setting - boot order, password etc. -
The next line after
"[4294671.260000] io scheduler cfq registered"
should be
"[4294671.260000] RAMDISK driver initialized:"
Maybe your computer is having trouble loading the RAMDISK. -
Have you verified that you have a good burn? See if there is a checksum available.

This guy fixed his problem by selecting the "force vesa driver" option instead of the auto-config option. I can't imagine why this helps, but worked for him. -
Yep tried that as well, I've gone through all the options none of them work.
It gets to the "io scheduler cfg registered" line and then stops and a second or so later the start of each line of text shifts halfway across the screen, there aren't any err msgs when the text is inline (all left justified) apart from cpu0 is not a valid intel processer (or something along those lines) and something about bios not found?
And there don't appear to be any err msgs when the text is all shifted halfway across the screen either.
To be honest it's not a big deal as I've re-installed XP/Vista from backups I had due to another issue so I've not got the 5.8gb's of spare room anymore as I've used the 9.7gb partition that Acer had their recovery backup in as I don't need it seeing as I have Vista ultimate with the complete PC backup option and the install dvd - kind of makes a backup partition redundant imo.
It would be nice to get gparted running so I can get some space back from the 60gb I'm using in Vista and add it to the XP partition but I suppose I can still use the space as long as I remember I have to change the install path of anything I want to install...
Thanks for the advice anyway guy -
here's the solution I came up with re: io scheduler cfq

Thanks, I had a looka and it says you went through all the options until you found one that worked.
I did that as well and none worked.
The only useful thing I could see in your post over at ubuntuforums.org was to have a copy of knoppix - does that work in the same way as the gparted livecd or do I have to have linux installed to use it?
I'm not too worried about my Acer now as it's all sorted as far as HDD space is concerned and I'm replacing it soon anyway, but I may need to partition the HDD of the new laptop I get - a Dell Vostro...
