I don't think you can put music on your nano without iTunes... or am I wrong?

Then perhaps you've been brainwashed. As far as I know, WinAmp still can as well as a lot of other programs. Google 'iTunes alternatives' if you don't believe it.

I use MediaMonkey for my iPod. Right now I'm thinking of removing every iTunes related program from my notebook.

WinAmp can also be used for iPod. So do foobar, but foobar requires another component. I think it is named foo_dop.
