I'm new to itunes and well, I'm getting a Classic 80gb Ipod w/video for Christmas. Now, I'm a computer-wize usually but there is one thing that seems to be annoying me. I uploaded all my mp3's and such from my old mp3 player to my computer and organized it in itunes (over 8000 songs... omg) I gave them all album covers and everything but since I had to upload all my songs from my old mp3 player... it's really taking a lot of my hard-drive space. Now, when I get my ipod and connect it to my computer and sync it so that all my songs transfer over to my ipod. How do I delete the songs off my PC without having it delete my songs (from the ipod) once I hook it up again and it automatically syncs??? Is there a way around this? Because if I ever need to restore my computer or anything... and have to reinstall Itunes... I'd hate to run into a problem and lose all my songs because it synced to a new library. I'm still learning Itunes but I'm at a loss when it comes to this problem.

Well, what you can do is check off the box "Manually Manage Music", so the iPod doesn't sync with the Library every time you plug in the iPod.

Or press and hold shift while connecting the iPod

It is strongly advised to NOT use your ipod as the only place to store your music. iTunes treats the ipod as a 1-way device, and you will not be able to easily get the files off of it. There are 3rd party tools that let you do this, and they are not hard to use. HOWEVER, the assumption by itunes is that you won't be doing this, and in some circumstances itunes has no problem deleting all of the files on the ipod because it assumes you have them on your computer.
If you really can't leave the music on your hard drive, set it up to manually sync as stated above, then move the music files to an external hard drive. If you don't have one, you could use your old mp3 player like a backup disk. -
Or forget about the stupid rules and behaviors of iTunes and manage your music with WinAmp or FooBar. I'm sorry, but who really needs a program that you constantly have to tell what not to do? Like don't install spyware (aptly named 'Quicktime agent'), don't associate all my media files with iTunes, don't rename, relocate and reorganize my media files, don't erase the files on my iPod simply because they aren't on the computer I use to charge my battery...Yeah, iTunes is really a great and intuitive program...

itunes is great when you just let it do it's thing. if you try to control it too much, just like windows, it will rebel.
