No problem here, on several systems as well.
Knowing iTunes on Windows it's utter crap, personally I am glad to get rid of it since I got my Zune. Anyway,

    Try this:
    - Uninstall iTunes
    - Uninstall All Apple related software on your system, including QuickTime.
    - Use CCleaner (free), to perform a system and registry clean up. Once done, check again and again the register until on more issues are found.
    - Open the start menu and type: shell:appdata, and hit ENTER key. From there go back 1 folder to AppData (C:\Users\<ACCOUTN NAME>\AppData). You should have 3 folders, Go on each of them and delete anything related to Apple or iTunes.
    - Delete (or backup + delete) your iTunes folder in your Music, and video folder in your profile.
    - Empty your recycle bin
    - Restart your computer
    - Now try to install iTunes 64-bit under Windows 7 64-bit.

It should work now. If not, can you provide a list of all your installed programs on your system?

Yes, there are some serious problems on some systems syncing with iTunes x64.
Perhaps take a look at the discussion at apple: Apple - Support - Discussions - iTunes 9 on Windows 7 x64 Has Problems ...
    Actually 32 pages :-(

Perhaps you can find there a solution for your system.

Unfortunately I was not so lucky to find a solution there for my Acer Aspire 8942G, because it seems that the only "real" solution is a BIOS update from your laptop manufacturer. So I am still waiting for that, unable to sync my iPod touch with my brand new Acer.

I hope you have more luck :)

    Regards!

I suggest a slight modification of GoodBytes' solution, eliminating a few steps and boiling it down to the essentials.
    Yup.

    Yup.

    Yup. That's all!

Now you can install one of the many good music management programs available.

I've heard that you should install QuickTime by itself first, then install iTunes. On that note, my wife has no problems with iTunes on W7 x64 Home Premium on her Toshiba notebook.

Apple offers iTunes for 64-bit windows. Google it. I made the same error and tried installing iTunes 32-bit.

iTunes for Windows isn't THAT bad. I use it because the UI is so much easier to look at and navigate with than other programs.

Thanx to all for your replies!

@blackspider: Lucky you. There are some assumptions on the apple thread, that the problem occurs only with some special chipset P55 or PM55 or HM55 from Intel.

@swarmer: I wish the solution would be so easy, but this iPod Touch thing is not able to be convinced to sync its apps via some other tool. Only iTunes does the trick, so far I know. :-(

@TSE: Unfortunately I am pretty sure to have the x64 version of iTunes. The Bonjour service and the Mobile Device Drivers are both in x64 version, while iTunes itself still shows up as *32 at the windows task manager, but this should be ok.

Ok, a better first set of questions might have been:

Do you really, really need to use iTunes? Are you buying and managing tunes from the Apple stores or simply trying to manage the user content on an iPod or iPhone?

There is quite a lot of very good, non-bloated non-Apple software out there that can easily manage user content on Apple hardware. JR Media Center (payware but worth every cent) is the one I use. I'm sure that other users here will pop in with their faves.

The other question is why you are having problems with iTunes. Yah, it's bloated and the Bonjour 'service' is a PITA, but iTunes usually works. Make sure that the firmware on your laptop is up to date as is the chipset software (for the OS-level USB drivers) just to eliminate that as a possible root cause of the problems.

I don't believe there's any other way to sync an iPod Touch than with iTunes. The Touch can't be used as a mass storage device (at least not without some hacking), unlike other iPod models.

I really hate iTunes, it is so slow... I often wonder what kind of crappy programmers work at Apple. The biggest computer company in the world and they can't make a decent product.

I stay as far away from Apple as I can but my daughters have Touch's and sometimes I get sucked into dealing with them. Like when a one week old Touch broke after having it's software automatically updated and had to be replaced, a painful process.

    @dynamic140

What is the specific problem you are having? I have iTunes working on Windows 7 x64. I installed the x64 version of iTunes. I'm not a fan of iTunes, but it works with my iPod touch (got it for free) and allows me to sync apps.

    @torinoco

A BIOS update to fix a software problem?

The issue with iTunes and certain motherboards and chipsets is caused by how Apple decided to code iTunes. You notice that iTunes itself is not 64 bit even if you install the 64 bit version of iTunes. Also notice that everything else in the 64bit package is actually 64 bit.

    Way to screw up Apple.

iTunes needs 3 other processes to actually sync with your iPod touch. Each of these processes is 64 bit. These processes actually intercept calls from the system driver (provided by Apple). In turn, the 3 processes (which are inherently 64 bit) cannot talk to a 32bit process. Thus, they need an interpreter. Welcome to the wonders of Windows. Microsoft provides a way to interpret between 64bit and 32bit. In other words, 32bit function libraries can be emulated to 64 bit and 64 bit to 32 bit. Confusing I know.

The 3 process (that iTunes needs) pass their outputs to conhost.exe. Each process will have its own conhost.exe (pefectly safe). This process then passes emulated outputs to iTunes. When iTunes talks to the 3 processes, it has its own conhost.exe and again, emulation occurs.

The problem with this emulation is that each link in this convoluted chain must access data and output data in a similar fashion. If even one link access data a different way or writes data is a different memory location, then the chain fails.

You need to wait for Apple to update the drivers.

    @metril

Thank you for your detailed explanation! Really interesting!
Believe it or not, if you take a look at the apple discussion forum I posted the link in my first post (if you have much, much time!), many of the people who had problems to sync their devices could solve their sync problems with a BIOS update from their manufactor.
But in that forum there is also the assumption that this problem can perhaps be solved by a driver update from apple, but this can of course not be verified until apple releases new drivers.

So, this all stays very mysterious.

By the way, even MS made a hotfix after long discussion at their forum to get rid of this problem: You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM
Unfortunately only for Nvidia chipsets :-(

Thanx to everyone for the constructive suggestions and informations 'til now!

I'll will ask over at the JRMC forums just to be sure.

It's my understanding that as long as AMDS is properly installed and running, third party software should be able to talk to an iPod Touch and iPhone to load both content and playlists.

AMDS=Apple Mobile Device Service, which is (more or less) the Apple-specific USB device drivers for windows.

The iPod Touch and the Iphone 4 require the most recent available version of AMDS (v17.58.0.something seems to be the latest). You can extract the installer .msi from the iTunes download with something like 7Zip or WinRAR.

Thanks for this info. I already use MediaMonkey myself (for my lowly SanDisk
mp3 player) but I didn't know it could interface with an iPod Touch. Got to
    tell my daughters about this.

    With iPhone/touch? I wasn't aware of such thing :(

I only have 80GB Classic and 5th gen 16GB Nano, those both work fine and I don't have iTunes even installed on this computer.

Going off the subject a little, but I would like to buy a Dell 1545 64 bit with Windows 7. Will itunes work ok if I download the 64bit version on that laptop?

Thank you for your help, :)

Why would it not? Of course it will run. 32 and 64-bit software will runs perfectly fine under Windows Vista/7 64-bit.
If you have an opportunity to use a 64-bit version, why not use it. It has possibility of providing better performance.
