To install Java or not to install Java? for Dell Support, Windows 8.1 does not support Java!

If you don't install it today, you may have to install it in the future. It's not a drain on system resources, but it does update quite often.

I'm moving this to Software because I think it's more appropriate... if you need it for something, you should install it, but that being said, I haven't actually needed it for anything for a while now... I don't think either of my current installs have it.

Same, Java has become the target of so many exploits these days that if I don't need it, I don't isntall it. If you do need it, make sure it remains up to date.

You do know alot of sites use java to underline and run their sites...so trying to recommend something when one doesn't see the complete picture is a fallacy in itself.

I have it enabled in all my browsers with no major issue as of yet. I would first recommend staying away from shady sites, deals and beware of social engineering before recommending to just stay away from Java.

I mean you could just recommend to disconnect the computer from the net and only use B&Ms in the future too. Just remember to cover up the pad before typing your pin in. No matter what you do someone is always after your money and you never are 100% safe.

Pingtest.net, GeForce.com, and a few other common sites I can't remember off the top of my head use Java.

I have to say I am an old timer with this. Up to two years ago I would not have installed without immediately installing Java. Well This thread has got me to thinking about how relevant Java still is, at least for me. So on the 10th, after my post, I removed it. I have to say so far so good, there have been no real issues with IE 11 cropping up.

It goes to show that it is way too easy to get set in your ways and not realize there is another path. Windows had best take heed.
