I have always sworn by K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, but recently I noticed when I play downloaded content from the net, which are WMV, if I fast forward to a certain point, the video plays at 2x speed for a while before it plays back normally.

what can I do this to make playback of wmv as smooth as MPEG?

I'm using the same. I just checked a few WMV files, and it works fine for me. Does it lag a bit before playing at 2x speed?

What media player are you using? That might make a difference, not just the codec pack.

Yeah, some of mine are WMV too, and when I fast forward, they lag a bit, a second at worst. But no speed at 2x. And I don't mid. :)

You have to be careful with CODEC packs, I've always found out that they tend to mess up something in some way. Personally, I've found that using a universal media player such as VLC is better than installing universal codecs into the OS.

Can you check the specification for the video file or just link them here and we can find out those information for you.

E.g. The codec used, the bitrate, how it was encoded, which software it's encoded with..etc

I just can't vibe with the interface of the VLC player. Personally, I like Windows Media Player, but you are stuck if you are running XP and want to use it to play DVDs.

I had to download the K-Lite Standard Codec pack to both my Acer Aspire One and my HP mini, both running XP, in order to play ripped DVDs from a portable hard drive.

Shortly thereafter I had problems with my USB ports on my HP mini not recognizing any USB devices. The New Hardware Wizard, which is worthless, would pop up.

I blamed my new installation of ESET Smart Security 4 for this, but I am beginning to think it was the Codec pack I downloaded.

Use Kmplayer +Coreavc on your netbook. That way, you can watch 720P and 1080P blueray rips on it. KMplayer's GUI is much better and the codec support is better than VLC's
