I keep getting the unable to install the update corresponding to KB936181, and for the reasons that are given in the Known issues of the Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

On the other hand, the steps MS suggests to get the thing to install are completely ineffective. I've had Vista try to install this thing and fail every time I shut down for quite a few days now, and I'm getting sick of it.

Anyone know how to really make this thing go?

I am not sure if it will help or not, but you may want to download the update and install it manually. It happened to me that some updates failed to be installed by Windows Update. But when I downloaded them and installed them manually, they got installed successfully.
