I downloaded a trial verion of anti-virus and it slowed and froze my computer.

Now Iam trying to uninstall it and it is taking hours to delete NTFS stream it 'created' on my harddrive.

Why is Kaspersky AV behaving like a virus

Anybody care to enlighten me ?

I don't have this problem with kaspersky. What version do you have?
It is one of the best, if not the best, AV to my mind, but it really slows down the computer. At least you know this slow down will bring you security, unlike Norton AV.

Kaspersky is a lecturer at the academy of Russian special services where they prepare the guys who steal american intellectual property, emptise american credit cards on-line, and block the internet sites revealing Putin's regime atrocities. MS Windows had to release their original code to these guys as a condition of starting the bussiness in Russia. Make your conclusions yourself, if you want to pay to this lab.

Imho nod32 and pc-cillin are probably the best anti-virus programs.

I hate to say it but this statement is very simplistic and deprived of even basic understanding of the politics of oligarchy, which has taken ground in Russia.
As far as software is concerned, however, I tend to trust and even admire Russian products. One of my favourites is the CD with Windows XP, which boots directly into Windows without any installation and bypasses any administrative restrictions of the existing XP installation.

At least you don't deny the facts mentioned and those were my only message here to not go off topic. Whether my understanding of the related issues is "simplistic" or not can't be judged based on those 2 lines.

I am curious if this product is not an example of the theft of American intellectual property.

@sutheep, the reviews giving No1 AV to Kaspersky which I read were obviously biased and made up. I'd advice to compare different sources before making the statements like yours.

I tend to think Kaspersky is one of the best out there... but I don't pay for AV, so I use Avast.

I had simillar experience with uninstalling kasperky, but eventually I managed to get it off. The streaming thing makes it faster at scanning, but a hell of a pain in the a$$ to get rid of. In the end I didn't like it that much.

I use PC-Cillin 2005, really liked it, tried the 2006 and it was BAD ... all reviews seem to agree that they took a LONG step in the wrong direction this year.

Currently I am sampling bitdefender (after several reviews that ranked it #1), it seems good and light but I am not yet sure if it is better than PC-Cillin 2005.

If you notice I have a hobby of trying software ... the main reason why my XP goes nuts at least once a month and I am forced to format (just formated 2 days ago, I have become so efficient at it that it only takes 3-5 hours :()

I stopped using Norton when I got W95.CIH. Then Pc-cilin (some years ago) turned my computer into a worm swamp. During college, the computer team there made me install Trend Micro, easily the worst anti-virus software out there....
Kaspersky is probably one of the ugliest Windows XP programs I have ever seen; its design is more suited for pre-Win98 OS. Yet, it is doing miracles over here. I don't know how many of you guys are in Europe, especially Eastern Europe, but I can tell you that K AV is worth the trade off between security and speed. K A-V is only for those of us who really need it.

As mush as I dislike Ivar's comments, I have to say I agree one should not buy Kaspersky. After all it's easy to find it for free because it's Russian. Ivar, just to make my point clearer, I don't admire Russian programs/programmers/ for their ethical value or fair-play spirit but for their ingenuity; which I think is reactive rather than pro-active. I think it's not fair to compare Kaspersky with such "products" as the above mentioned CD.This is prejudice. I would instead greet any Russian attempt to bring to light a good product, which says "we can not only destroy but also create"

Regardless of what/who kaspersky is, imo kaspersky is one of the best AVs out there since I have installed Norton and McAfee but they failed detecting some viruses, I mean brontox, but I tried kaspersky and worked well.

If some people are creating viruses, and others next door are writing antiviruses, both sharing the same coffee (or rather tee) room, there is no surprise that the viruses of the first team are better detected by the progs of the second team. Imho so the statistics of KAV is made. :)

Btw, I had a similar positive experience with a little known Bullguard AV vs. Norton and BitDefender but I don't hurry up with the conclusions.

Well i you like to sample and try softwares and always formatting..why not create an image or ghost of your HD after you install your OS and your other important applications, better yet install it in a separate partition so you have separate partition for your data. Creating the image or ghost file for freshly installed OS and apps and then just re-imaging your HD after you messed it up is faster and better than reformatting and reisntalling everytime. Re-imaging or re-ghosting would only take a max of 1 hour.

But if you dont have time for that why not install VMWARE or Virtual PC and just play around with that instead of trying out with your main OS.

Have to agree with whoever mentioned nod32. If I paid for AV,I would get this.
    Since I don't want to pay, I use AVG-free.
    And my brain. :)
