Is there a way to keep an application that you close to either stay running in the background or keep it in memory so when you open it again it pops right up? On a Mac, once you open iTunes, it stays in the background or in memory so when you close and reopen, it pops right up, no load time. Is there a program to use for this or to speed up application launch times in Windows?? Thanks!

In Windows that can be done, but it depends on how the program was written, not on some external utility. My guess is that the same thing holds for Macs.

How do I activate that feature for Windows programs? I was hoping to run iTunes and Opera out of memory.

Why not just minimize the program? You can even go a step further and get a multi-desktop program for Windows which allows you to hide your application via shortcuts or something.

You don't. Either the app was written with that capability, or it doesn't have it. The simplest solution is to just minimize the windows to the task bar (which you can hide if you don't want to see the little icons), or follow jackluo923's suggestion about a multi-desktop program.

I'm guessing the OP wants to do this since the program, if minimized, would take up space on the taskbar, some programs minimize to the notification area, but not all of them. I'm pretty sure Windows 7 has a feature like this to keep your taskbar less cluttered.

I think Windows Vista does that already. As you use an application more often, it remembers it and pre-loads it into memory for faster start-times. I think the feature is called Super-Fetch, and it works on regular documents as well (Word documents, etc.)

That's what I would recommend. Here's an ultra-lightweight app that does that, called PowerMenu.
