As you can see, the ISO is smaller than a DVD, not bad.
However, right now isn't the time to do it, wait a month and get the SP1 ISO's first.
I prefer USB memory tho, together with this program that works with most Windows and Linux versions, and unlike the MS USB tool it works with modified ISO's too.
You can put various ISO's on one USB-memory and choose which to start when booting.

I have a question - does Dell/Alienware still let you use the CD Key found on the system with a retail disc? I had an Inspiron years ago where if you had a retail Windows disc it let you fresh install.
I bought a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for my G50, wondering if when I get my M15x I can just pop in the Win7 disc and fresh install? -
It's up to you if you want to pick 32 or 64 bit, but I'd wait until SP1 ISO's shows up. -
That way I can pop in my Home Premium 64-bit CD and install fresh. Have a Momentus XT on the way, so I planned on swapping that out ASAP and doing a fresh install the day I get her. God the next 2-3 weeks are going to be painful. -
Sweet!! Thanks for the instructions!
I use the .iso method....downloaded from the mirror...used the eicfg removal utility on the .iso on downloaded ISO ....then i popped in a blank dvd and burned the image and VOILA! perfect recovery disc that i then proceeded to do a clean install of windows 7 onto my new ASUS P50IJ-X3 that had a TON of bloatware on it....now i gotta fresh laptop that's super fast!
Thanks again for the instructions! It's annoying that ASUS can't just send a windows recovery CD but i guess that's how they make the majority of people keep all that crap on their laptops...thank god i am not a noob! -
Ahbeyvuhgehduh Lost in contemplation....
Great thread.... Thanks for posting it!

Will the links be updated to include Windows 7 w. SP1?
-
Will these be updated with Windows 7 SP1 links? As in, to avoid having to install SP1 when the O/S is installed?
EDIT: I should have looked above. -
For whatever reason, I can download the x86.exe and the setup2.box, but the setup1.box has a server error.
I used DownThemAll.
Any idea ? -
Anyways, I got it working thats what counts, thanks =) -
Ive had problems with windows 7 and the backup activation key program. when i ram the ABR program to backup my key on windows 7 professional 64 bit oem it worked fine. it gave me a key number and certificate. when i ran it on windows 7 home premium 32 bit oem it gave me a key but no certificate. so the restore didnt work. I dont know if its a 32 bit / 64 bit thing or what why it failed. In the end my key worked anyway but i had to activate.
just wanted to post this so people would make sure BOTH the key and certificate is in there if you want to restore without activating. -
This ABR thingy is just for convenience.
You can always use the key on the sticker of your computer and activate by phone.
Michael -
If ABR is giving you troubles you need to remember to run at as admin, and some AV's are known to interfere with it so you might try disabling it for a minute (MSE does not from my experience).
-
I had no AV installed when i tried to use ABR and i also ran as administrator and it still fails to give a certificate it just gives the code. Ive used it before on one of my other machines and it backed up the number and certificate fine. It also restored fine. Its just this one 32 bit machine that its not working. It doesnt see or cant find the certificate for some reason. there is no error. it just spits out 1 file instead of 2. (backup-key but no certificate). ITs pretty tricky really because there is no error it says its successful but yet if you try and restore thats when you get the error that there is no certificate.

I have a lenovo thinkpad x201 tablet 64 bit with brand new hard drive. I followed the steps for the iso method, and when i prepared the usb drive with the 64 bit iso, it told me it cannot write the boot sector of the usb drive. the microsoft app invited me to click the link for online help, which of course took me to a totally worthless and unrelated page. I tried it with the 32 bit, and the usb drive prep went without error, but my laptop says there are no drivers on the usb drive from which to install windows. i am moving on to the 3 file method....
-
Hi,
have you tried another USB drive? Perhaps yours is somewhat faulty or simply not bootable for whatever reason.

Hey guys, I'm trying to do a clean install of windows 7. However I believe my copy to be an OEM so I really am not sure how to go about this. I just want to make sure I don't screw up somewhere.
I made a thread about this elsewhere on the forums, so I'll just quote my post and questions:
-
Some help guys?
-
To me it seems like you refuse to make a backup of personal files before starting, which is a bad idea, and can also be the reason why you won't get any help.
Another reason why people won't answer is that you basically ask for a tutorial that's very easy to find elsewhere. Google.
I'd try out the ASUS discs, because of this.
This is easy to do, you don't really need any instructions, but be prepared for to take more than two hours.
Everything should work from the start.
If the method above doesn't work, you're going to make a clean install using the ISO in the first post, preferably with the program in my last post.
But I really think you should get to know more about this before trying it.
You want to do a Clean install, as opposed to the preloaded Windows that comes with your laptop.
You also want a Custom (Advanced )installation, as opposed to Upgrade when all the programs preloaded is kept after the reinstall.
Check out this, a simple guide of the first steps. Also check out more movies if you fee like, and use google.
However, before you do anything at all, back up ALL your personal files, there's no other way to go in the long run. If you can't afford a spare HDD then wait until you have one. -
I don't understand why I need that program. I've already made recovery discs and I have made the dvd with the windows 7 from this thread and I have a legit key. Hell I still have the recovery partition and can just do the F9
at boot thing.
The program just seems a bit redundant. At least from what I understand of it's functions.
I just wanted to know which steps of the regular installation method does the ABR program alter and if there is anything I should note? No need to lecture me on why people will or will not help me. -
ABR does not alter your installation method.
If it works, it creates a backup of the factory preinstall registration/activation and is also capable to restore it.
"Benefit": You then won't need to type in the key from the back of your laptop and call MS activation hotline.
Just a matter of convenience, nothing else.
Michael -
So... basically I:
1. Before reinstall, activate the backup.exe
2. Save the created files elsewhere
3. Reinstall as anyone usually would BUT avoid entering the key when prompted to do so.
4. Recreate the ABR folder with the corresponding location of the files that had been created within the new installation.
5. Activate the restore.exe and everything will work as if I had clean installed and ACTIVATED a retail copy of W7, except that it's supposed to be OEM.
Is all of that correct? -
Stuck At 96%.Why?
-
@sidg666
It should work as you described.

Any links to the downloads with SP1 integrated??
-
This worked EXACTLY as you described in your tutorial!!
I've got now a C:\Win7.iso in my drive ready to be burned, many thanks!
I've got a Windows 7 SP1.iso burned aswell so i'll just need to install it right after the clean install.... -
Is there a guide like this for Windows vista?
-
My laptop will come with OEM Preinstalled win7 Premium Chinese, I don't read Chinese so i will do clean install.. And i will back up OEM key And install Win7 Premium English. my Chinese OEM key will work with Eng version of win7 home premium?
-
thanks for this guide very useful indeed. a possible suggestion i would sa is about where storing the downloaded files in 3 file method to a c:\folder location for less keystrokes and a little easier to navi in the dos shell but other than that its flawless
-
Tried to find that tool so i can create the iso on a disc/usbstick, butcouldnt find it. Could anyone provide me with a proper link, or program to do this?
-
i used this to make the bootable usb-drive. -
Thanks for digging that up.
-
i did everything correctly, booted from the usb-drive but when i started the installer it gave a message:
"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB flash drive, please insert it now."
Anyone else had this problem? I'm going to download the iso and try again. -
That's normally a bad download or a bad burn/copy to disk. If a new download doesn't help try a different flash drive.
-
problem solved, i was using my usb 3.0 port but when i put the stick on usb 2.0 there were zero problems. thanks a lot for the tutorial!

It's easy enough to build your own Win7 SP1 ISO.
-
maybe for some. if it is easy, to that point, then someone here can kindly post those versions here, by that argument!
-
I've read elsewhere that this isn't working for everyone, due to error in RT Seven Lite, so YMMV. -
I've done it, the ISO and the install ends up being 500 MB too big, probably due to backup files that I can't remove, unlike when you install SP1 separately.
I also get the "Windows is not genuine" text in the corner of the screen, and also a popup.
It won't go away until I hit Windows + Pause keys. -
Mats, did you use the official, reverse integration method or just RT7Lite?
I know the WAIK download is a big hughge but once you strip out all the carp you are left with a few megs that can safely be reused to re-integrate SP2 and SP3 in future. -
Hello Friends
Need Help as I and 3 more of my friends are experiencing problems with the ABR Utility: ABR (Activation Backup and Restore) | directedge.us
The problem is that the ABR activation_backup.exe is able to create the .txt file, but is unable to create backup-cert.xrm-ms
When we double click on the activation_backup.exe, the CMD window flashes for less than a second and disappears
So I tried running the program using CMD, so that I can see errors if any. Please see the screenshot below to see the error:
I request you to please help me with this, as me and my friends have tried lots of time but the program is unable to create backup-cert.xrm-ms
Help Appreciated
Thanks and Regards -
Next time I will use a copy with SP1 integrated by MS, everything else is just a waste of time.
No, I'm not saying it won't work. It's just that fiddling with VMWare, WAIK, DISM..... takes too much time for me.
SP2 will most likely show up about the same time as W8, and in that case I'll go for the latter. -
I suspect that you are using the wrong version of ABR to backup the information for a OEM install of Windows 7. You want " ABRbeta.exe with Windows 7 Support". http://directedge.us/files/abr/ABRbeta.exe. NOT ABR-1.0.exe.
Of course the retail version of Windows 7 does not have a CERT so there would be no CERT to backup in that case. You didn't mention if you have OEM or Retail versions installed on your machines. -
He already resolved it.

I followed the dirs and downloaded both the premade iso and the 3 files, creating my own iso. However, when I ran a test with vbox, the CD starts the boots then fails. I get a "Windows failed to start" and I am kicked to the Windows Boot Manager.
Any ideas? A buddy at MS gave me 2 x64 Ultimate serials from his allocation and I would love to get a retail version of Win7 running vs the RTM.
