i gotta 400mhz compaq fromm WW2 era and was thinkin of poping a penguin disrto, its been rejecting almost everything i had so what would you recomend i try thatd keep it runing up to date yet moving at this neckbraking .4Ghz speed?
id be happy to try unix if anyone has any good (compatible) ideas

Slackware, Arch Linux, FreeBSD or D.a.m.n Small Linux.
Post the hardware specifications so I can recommend a suitable system for it.
I'm currently running SUN Solaris Express (a UNIX) on my ThinkPad, and it's
runnning fine. But it would be slow on a 400MHz laptop, of course.
Do not forget to specify what work you're thinking of getting from this machine. -
400Mhz amd processor, generic vid card, 64mb ram, 10-20-or-40 gb hd... using it from clan bomber to writing papers n gimp

Any of the above mentioned Linux distributions and FreeBSD would do. You can
also try Debian Linux, but it will 'feel' a little slower on such an old machine. But
the beauty of Linux is that you can tweak it to your likings.
Avoid Fedora Core, SuSE or Mandriva. Also avoid GNOME and KDE desktop
environments. You're better off with XFce, FluxBox/OpenBox/BlackBox, IceWM,
WindowMaker or FVWM.
FreeBSD is not a Linux distribution, it's a direct variant of the original BSD UNIX.
LUGs please help
