What is your laptop boot time? By laptop boot time, I mean the time from when you press the power button to the moment you start up an internet browser,ie/firefox/etc.
Please post your time's, along with any heavy programs that might slow the boot like a firewall or an antivirus program. Thanks!![]()
EDIT: If you could, please paste your bootvis results on here like nathan did. thx! dl: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=664

I don't know how long exactly (I voted for just under a minute), but my major heavy programs are my firewall/antivirus and my wireless utility. I also have a Vista Customization package that seems to take some time as well. But, I am thinking about s****ping that thing and just loading a skin because it seems to be unstable.
-
Mine takes a little more than 30 secs, if i had to guess. My big programs are probably just my wireless and AVG antivirus. Other than that I dont have many other non-essential programs set to boot at startup.

Oh gosh horrible. Used to get 30-35 secs. Now I get 95.97 sec, 44.56 without the HP printer **** running in the background. The HP printer software is overkill, it's way out of control. I love the printer, hate the software. Here take a look.
Oh, if you want to find out your boot times, just use bootvis and mark down the time for the last process creation (other than bootvis.exe). -
It has gotten my boot time under 30sec. The longest thing that takes time to load is NHC. Oh well... That is a pretty essential program. lol

Thanks for the help Tim, I use HijackThis. The only HP startup filesunder sysinternals is 'hpqtra08.exe', HJT adds the service 'HPZipm12.exe'. One of them must spawn all those other HP startup beasts. The problem is I don't want to mess anything up be removing any of the HP files. So, I'll just suffer with the bloatware. What program are you talking about Tim? I tried autoruns and deleted all not found entries. I don't know what else to do with it.
-
The first one, Autoruns. I have an HP printer as well(One of those free ones.
) I used Autoruns to stop the printer software from loading at the start of windows. I have had no problems doing this. I would recomend it. It is still on the computer just doesn't start up with windows.

I'll play it safe and disable the startup file in msconfig, and the service in services.msc.Then I'll post back what happens.
edit: yep, just what I thought. I can't scan to my computer without the HP programs runing in the background. Please don't tell me you have the PSC 1400! I used to have one and it was a POS! I go off on it here. Sorry if I'm trashing your printer, it was just my experience. -
Mine is approx 45 sec. Was a little faster when I had avg as a virus program but switching to Kaspersky and added about 10 secs. No big deal and I like the Kav a little better than the avg.

I couldnt stop HP from loading in my laptop as well, so I just uninstalled it..... startup time was reduced by about 10 -20 seconds.
Well, after that, I'm still getting a startup time of 52. Anyone got any suggestions for my laptop? Tunexp and bootvis dont help... one bit. -
I also use a Vista brico pack, so technically there's no software to load.....however, I also added glass2k to add transparency to Windows. It's fun.
The biggest time killer by far in my 40 sec startup is McAfee Virus Scan. My university's clean access system only allows McAfee or Norton....ugh. Slow or slow and dumb...oh the choices.
Even with that, and desktop sidebar and Zone Alarm/NHC, with Startup Delayer I can space out those programs and get the time down. It helps prevent programs from grabbing at the same memory as windows services causing a stalemate.
At this point I trimmed it as best I can, and love everything I have left! -
God dammit >.< Mine took like 80 seconds its a brand new FE with very minimal stuff on it, almost 40 seconds was spent on the BIOS splash screen which I think is a little bizarre, Its about 20 seconds from the time the windows loading screen appears and when FF starts
-
My Bios took only 12 seconds to load... another 38 seconds from bios to loading up firefox...
ttupa, is there any consequence for delaying your programs like that..... zonealarm should start first since it's a firewall. -
Well, the problem is that if you don't delay them chances are that two will reach for the same resource, one will be rejected (or both) and it won't start. By delaying the startup times, you're just spacing out the order in which programs start. There is no harm because they can't all start at once anyway. Just remember, if you sometimes see a program not start... Windows will ALWAYS win the power struggles during startup.
Plus, even though it is an extra program, I think it makes the whole process somewhat more efficient.
You can also decide, for each startup program, where it will be launched from. You can pick from the Windows registry, the startup folder, or the delayer program's queue. It's neat, and fun to tinker with to see if times improve.
The firewall doesn't necessarily need to be first, but it is near the front for me. The Bluetooth service, diskeeper service, and YPop's are all at the end, as is NHC. All essential programs load first to get me up and running. -

Mine's a mess. -
it's sooo fast, maybe your hardrive is configured as RAID??
-
I get 20 sec on mine, very quick, I have no idea why thought. But I'm not complaining
-
20 seconds... I'm guessing without any antiviruses?,zak :S

How is everyone timing their boot times?

Please post your bootivis results so we can see

Time from turning notebook on to completion of XP media load is 53 sec. It was a couple of minutes until I uninstalled McAfee Anti Virus. I now use CA EZantivirus, much faster.
-
I totally agree. If my school didn't require McAfee or Norton, believe I would be on Avast! in a heartbeat!! I hate how bloated McAfee is, but it is better than Norton.
It has at least 3 processes taking up valuable resources. 2 of them use over 25mb!! -
The basic factors that would influence boot times are: Disk drive type and speed, fragmentation of the disk drive, RAM size and speed, CPU type and speed, applications and drivers loaded at startup.
Considering the disk drive, CPU and RAM in most cases are basically static, a good defrag could impact your boot results by placing the drivers needed at boot time in optimal locations on the disk drive.
Using PerfectDisk it was able to defrag my hibernation file for example. I would say my system now comes back from hibernation about a third as fast. -
21 seconds.
-
3 minutes from startup to loading OS i know its aloong time but i like everything ready and running once i log in
-
Hahaha! Just used a stop watch and I get 12 seconds from power button to web browser!
-
lysander how did you get it too boot so fast??
-
For about a week or so in the beginning of my HP notebook the boot time was about 90 seconds. Right now,i have got it to 55 seconds. Any ideas what to do to lower it further. I have no firewalls, antiviruses etc. and all is to a minimum.
