    (Hi, new here)

I got a new laptop last week, a Asus A6JC (T2300, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, go7300), and I've been having some problems when player movies in VLC.

The entire laptops locks up when this happens, with the sound stuttering in the background. The laptop is completely unresponsive when this happens. Only way to fix it is to hold the power button for five seconds to turn it off.

This has only happend on a specific series of movies, which have a quality that isn't to good. Crappy playback with stuttering and glitches (crappy files), all in XViD format.

I can play other XViD:s without this problem, and I have only seen it happen in VLC, no other player.

Anyone have any idea of the cause of this (other than that the files themselves are the problem)?

When I got the laptop and did a clean install of WinXP Pro, instead of Home which came with the laptop. Installed the drivers what was on the CD that came with the computer. I didn't install all of the stuff which was on it, only the drivers, no applications.

There are some newer drivers on Asus site, but I didn't install them because it took way to long to download them all, so I choose the CD instead (all mirrors gave me 5 kB/s, I top at 240 kB/s). Should I install any of them? Also which gfx drivers should I use? Using 82.93 at the moment.

One more thing, why does the laptop see 512MB of available GFX memory? I thought it was 128MB dedicated and 256MB TurboCache (see attached image)?

    Thanks in advance.

Moved to software, as I think its more likely an issue with VLC than anything else. I have had various issues with certain players and specific files....eg powerdvd wouldnt play one file but it would be fine in wmp etc. I usually put this down to a missing codec or a poorly transcoded file....some people find it fun to use the weirdest codec they can find for audio for eg...making playback a pain in the arse....you can try converting the file into a more generic format, this sometimes fixes issues.

... when in doubt stop using that player?? there are so many video and audio players out there uninstall and use a different one lol that solves all problems...

    is that german?!

and it records it as 512 because it is taking the 256 ram and added it to it.. its not actually 256 if u have a 128 dedicated its 384...
