My laptop won't shut down. Nothing happens at the screen "Shutting Down" except for the spinning wheel.

I think this is msn messenger related.

This only started happening after I installed the latest version of windows live messenger (Note: messenger doesn't start. I can see it in processes but I never see the messenger screen, and double clicking the icon simply spawns another process). I uninstalled and then ran ZapMessenger, and again attempted to shut down. My laptop now shuts down properly.

Today I installed an older version of messenger (8.1). This version works properly, except lo and behold, my laptop won't shut down again. Once again, after uninstalling and running ZapMessenger, my laptop shuts down.

Note: this is similar to this thread, except my laptop won't shut down.

I can only guess a MSN process isnt getting killed. Can you post the list of running processes prior to a shutdown?

I got really annoyed at WLM not showing up and my comp not shutting down (I started the other thread btw), so I popped in the windows 7 disk and did a fresh install. All ur files gets saved in a folder called windows.old. I then reinstall msn and it works fine now.

Well that just #^#@)!$ blows. I really do not want to reinstall windows.

    Fixed. Here's what I did:

Yesterday, I was attempting to install photoshop cs4, but the installation completes with error 2 each time. After uninstalling I ran the ccleaner registry cleaner. This was the key I think.

Now after installing the latest version of messenger, it launched immediately upon finishing install. Problem #1 solved: messenger wont start.

I disabled the messenger process startup in msconfig.

Then, before shutting down my laptop I checked the task manager. Messenger process is still running even though I shut down the application. I tried to kill the process but it just won't die. I try shutting down anyways, and lo and behold, laptop wont shut down. Flipfire is correct. So I force the shutdown by holding the power key.

Once my laptop is up an running again, everything works fine. Messenger starts when I click its icon. When i shutdown the app, no processes exist and my laptop will properly shutdown.

My suggestions to anyone facing the same problem:
    -Uninstall messenger
    -run ZapMessenger
    -run ccleaner registry cleaner
    -install messenger
    Done

    Thanks for your help flipfire.

Bonus points if anyone can help me install photoshop cs4. I keep on getting error 2 each time.
