nero consistantly crashes my system and i'm done with it. i'm looking for a lean and mean dvdr burning app. I have alchohol 120 and dvd decrypter but they don't have the burning capability i'm looking for. i need something that will let me pick and choose which files i want to burn. alcohol 120 and dvd decrypter's burning capabilities are limited to burning images (unless i'm blind and can't find the feature i need)

    any recommendations?

I've been using the SonicDVD software that came with my 700m. It's worked out fine so far except for some issues with buring video files to data DVDs. Large avi files don't stream off the DVD for whatever reason. Other than that, it's worked out great for making DVDs.

Yeah. The GUI is pretty simple. Just choose the type of disc and then you can add files or folders to the disc. Hit burn and start making your DVD.

CDBurnerXp and DeepBurner are both free and work quite well for basic burning tasks like making audio and data cds, and data DVDs. They are not as good as Nero at some things like converting mp3s on the fly and you can't burn a video dvd. They work just a little slower. Are you getting an error messages before crashing? Maybe you want to try to install just Nero Express, it is still better than most available burning software.

i'm running nero express, it came with the dvd burner i bought (put it into an external case and running usb2). this is what happens...

backup files (data, music, movies) to a dvdr

    nero does fine, no problems

    task finishes

    drive ejects disc

i click 'next' and 'finish' in nero

and here's the rub: nero hangs... (1) sometimes the nero window loses everything except the border which refuses to disappear (even killing the process from task manager doesn't work, the process just stays there), or (2) nero successfully closes, but it (the process, not the app) still running in background. this is evidenced when i try to launch windows explorer after closing nero... when i click on 'my computer' in the tree, it should normally bring up a list of drives, the documents folder, etc., instead, post-nero, it hangs and crashes after clicking on 'my computer' in the explorer tree.

the only solution at this point is a hard reboot

happens 100% of the time i use nero... if i want to back up a couple dvds, it's completely frustrating as i have to hard boot my computer everytime nero is done

    anyways, that's the prob

I'm just throwing out ideas. Got the latest drivers, updates, etc. Sometimes those USB chipsets can be flakey. Do you have firewire on your external case/laptop? Maybe throw the burner into your desktop, see if that is the problem? You can tell Nero not to eject disc. Close it before opening drve. Maybe the full version of Nero? I pickup up an OEM copy of Nero on ebay for less than ten dollars.

I think that there is nothing better than nero, but the sonic recording suite is pretty good as well, depending on what it is that you want to burn.

Personally, I find Nero the best burning software on the market. It's possible the lockup problems could be relating to other software in the system. A fresh (manual) reload of the system may help.

Other software you can try is Roxio CD/DVD Creater. It's another popular package in the market, but I don't really like it.

nero is good with burning cd's and dvd's (data type), but if you want to burn/buckup dvd movies you can choose some good software like DVD Fab Platinum or DVD Clone II,...
most reliable is Nero, but if you don't like it than...
i had terrible experince with sonic while backuping dvd movies so i don't use it anymore.
