    Criteria:
    Gapless playback
    Light ram use
Uncluttered, easy to use U.I (I can accept by way of skinning)

That's it! I don't need burning/copying features or tons of codec support (everything is in .mp3 or is audio CD)

Been using Foobar, but I've given up on it, simply because I haven't found a skin that I like and I don't have the time to learnt o make my own :p

I'd like to know about quintessential, winamp 5 lite and winamp 2.x*

*I can guess why its used but bugs?

I'd always recommend FB2K over anything else first. But it obviously isn't for everyone.

Based on your criteria the next best thing would probably be Winamp 2.91. Some people claim if you remove all the unnecessary things in Winamp 5 it'd be roughly the same but I've never tried it.

Another potential player would be musikCube. Although relatively new, its built around a mySQL database and C code. Its very lean, and handles extremely large playlists well, I'd say as well as FB2K. The interface does look kind of like FB2K so it might be a turnoff for you though..

With Foobar, its not so much the look, but rather I haven't found a skin that allows me to view files or filter files the way I want to. If that is possible feel free to say so now!

musikCube looks very interesting, so thanks for the heads up

Can you example how you want to filter files? By genre/year etc. or something like that ?

Perhaps your thinking of something like this: ?

I mean with the new single columns, it manages to save a lot of room and reduce clutter by having groups, you can define the artist/album info for the entire album. And the only things different would be the titles etc. Also, this design incorporates foo_browser which I believe is the kind of filtering you want ?!?

In any moment I could say want to filter by a genre or artist. I suppose what I'm describing is what 99% of music players do. I just haven't made the effort to learn more about Foobar!

    For FB2K
    Method 1):
This is the component you need for FB2K foo_uie_quicksearch. It lets you type the exact string on the fly of what you want filtered. I believe it saves your searches in the search bar, so you can look up recently used strings.

    Method 2):
A less complicated way but faster once set up is using dynamic playlists with foo_autoplaylist. And then you can have X amount of songs with the a certain tag display in an automatically updated playlist.

    Method 3):
Use foo_browser, and it will be like Windows Explorer but with filters based on tags

    Method 4):
Use foo_albumlist, and again you will be able to filter out songs based on tags.
