Ive used the search feature tirelessly and I will admit its not my most capable area of computer work.

I found some useful posts in other threads, and tried to Google some drm free music downloading programs, but nothing seemed to match up or provide good results.

Ideally I am looking for a flat fee... say 15$/month for unlimited DRM downloading. Any suggestions?

BTW this is somewhat urgent, Im on my new p-7811FX and after going through my 20 hours of laptop setup and security I refuse to put some dangerous program like limewire on here and I need this music ASAP to set up a small library on a zune for my mother.

Thanks for all the help in advance, love the site so far.

I don't know of any DRM free subscription things, I mean it would defeat the whole purpose of subscriptions if DRM weren't there.

I would recommend emusic for a sort of subscription where you can download like 50 songs a month for a flat fee, no rollover.

Or Amazon mp3 for just music with no subscription

Unfortunately, there's nothing I know of like that that exists. Nothing that'll put it on a Zune, at least. There are things like napster.com which will give you a subscription player for a fee. Microsoft has screwed over so many people with their copy protection that I can't recommend it to anyone in good conscience. Short of that, you can get DRM-free files from Amazon.com and Magnatune, and depending on what kind of music your Mom likes, there is also a lot of good, free music available at places like Archive.org, mp3.com, Jamendo and so on.

The Zune Marketplace has a $15/month unlimited subscription plan. Wouldn't that be perfect since your using a zune?

Just use Tunebite to rip all of the drm'ed Zune songs to non-DRM mp3 files. All the music you want for $15

I just canceled my Napster subscription. I plan on switching over to Zune.net. Zune.net now allows a subscriber to keep any 10 songs (Sans DRM) of their choice per month during the subscription. I think that is quite reasonable for only $14.99/mo.

I'd recommend Amazon mp3 downloads. They are DRM-free, good bitrate mp3's and there's no "app" to download for single tracks (I think they have a optional thing for whole albums). $.89 or $.99 per song is fine.

Alternatively, if you don't mind iTunes, and if the Zune can play M4A format, check out iTunes for "iTunes Plus" tracks. They are DRM-free and the bitrate on them is also very good.

I've used mp3sparks.com before but since it's Russia I'm not sure how legit it is.

I don't see anyone else mentioning this, I skimmed the thread so sorry if I overlooked.

eMusic has always been the DRM free music subscription site. Pioneered the idea of DRM free music online (legally).

Probably because the big four record companies (Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, and EMI Group) don't contract wil emusic because they don't like it's business structure (no DRM). Therefore, emusic specializes in "independent" music.

Yea, but as you mentioned, the files would not work on a Zune, which is what the OP wants.

To the OP, I recommend using Zune.net subscription to download your music. You'll be able to download unlimited amounts each month and they work on your Zune (provided you keep paying each month ;)). Also, at the end of each month, you get to keep 10 of them in your permanent collection (don't know if they're DRM free or not).

If you want to buy DRM-free music, then I suggest Amazon. They have good quality, inexpensive, DRM-free songs. However, even at $.89/song, hundreds of songs is a lot of money. If you want/need hundreds or more songs right off the bat, then I suggest Zune.net. There is even a 14-day free trial: http://www.zune.net/en-us/software/zunepass/default.htm

Actually YES it does work on a zune. Ruckus lets you put it on any compatible device (which any zune running 3.1 is).

You simply would need "Ruckus to Go" with it, and you can transfer over all the DRM music you want! :D

Many schools offer this for free, otherwise it is very cheap, much less than $15 per/month if I remember correctly... :)

I've been using Ruckus for over a year now and love it. It works well, and they have a huge library to choose from...

    Hope this helps!
