Time to format.....and you are so lazy to call Microsoft and wait for the stupid computer to feed you in those activation code digits...

frear not........we wll activate once on the phone......and NEVER call miscrosoft again unless we change hardware...here's how:

    1) Format and install your flavour of Windows Vista.

    2) Call Microsoft, now you have to give them that long installation ID right?

    3) You will get the Activation code.....start typing it in the boxes...... but DO NOT HIT ENTER or OK when done!!!

    4) Write that activation code somewhere safe or take a snapshot of your desktop area that contains the activation code using the Snipping Tool in Windows.

    5) Done! The next time you format, don't call Microsoft, just choose phone activation, choose the same location you entered before, then start entering the old activation code you once got. I you hadn't change your hardware, that code will still work!!!!

    Hi.

I have a Vista laptop on order.

Does vista not have a pre-activated code like XP has, you know the one the engineer who made your laptop used so he did not have to go online.

I have a program to view my Xp version code , is their not somthing similar for Vista or has everything changed?

    thanks

    John.

By "change the hardware", does that include modifying partition size?

Nice guide. You should know how many time I had to call to activate WinXP.....

John: Your cd-key is still on a sticker under your laptop. At the factory they use pre-activated recovery DVDs.

No changing you partition size does not change your activation code. The hardware is still intact!

The code that you are entering has to match the hardware specifications and model numbers of the computer you are installing it on. Anything else is unaffected :)

Isn't that code generated after every install?

That does not work anymore, trust me I've tried. The code is created with three pieces of information, (1) computer hardware, (2) installation key, and (3) current time. Each time you get the MS code, its different because it basically uses a timestamp to generate the code. Different code, and different required key to type in.

    Won't work.

Thought so. I mean, I have had a similar problem with Sony's stupid SonicStage. I mean, this would of been a dream for every pathetic "hacker" on the internet... It would have been posted before somewhere, written in red or something like that ("How to fool Microsoft"). I guess they're not that dumb.

MS used non-timestamped activations until about XP and Office XP, and it was changed because pirates finally figured that out.

You know, I'm starting to think Microsoft are getting smarter and smarter every day, until they will figure out that it is always someone with MSDN connections that leaks their OS and office products.

That's what I thought at first, but I tried the same activation code and it worked!

And I've tried it three times with the same PC, each a week apart. And it didn't work for me.

Oh God, I just realized you changed the method...

You saved both the original code and the response code...I didn't think about that

Alright, from here on it I'm doing that your way :D.

Oh, and here's another method as well...at least for XP, can anyone confirm it works with Vista?

    1) Copy wpa.bak and wpa.dbl from C:\Windows\system32 from your original installation.
    2) Reinstall
    3) In safe mode, or from anther OS or whatnot, restore those files to the same location.

    See I told you.

And i do know about that XP method but have never tried it. I have one method that works perfectly right now so I don't need another ;)

Maybe someone else could try your method and tell us.

These kind of arguments are not needed, I deleted the six posts. If you want something done then just PM me or another mod.

great thread, i was thinking of saving the code when i switched from 32->64 bit, but then again I only reformat once a year so no biggie.

Umm, I don't know if it'll work that way, if you save the code of a 32 bit installation I sould guess you need a new code for your 64 bit installation.

    Just an assumption.

no, i was gonna save the 64bit code, for future use, but i figured i'd prolly lose it by the time i need to format again.
