I bought this Lenovo to run Win2K although it came with Vista. All my useful engineering applications run on Win2K but not on Vista, so I figured I could do a LL format, then load Win2K.
Now I get a "STOP 0x7B" bluescreen during the Win2K install. As far as I can figure it from the Microsoft support site, Win2K does not recognize the CD, a Matsuhita/Panasonic UJ870. There does not appear to be a source for the driver and Lenovo/IBM tell me they never wrote a Win2K driver. Their best offer was a set of CDs for $45 to re-establish Vista.

Anyone got any ideas how I can get this Lenovo2746 (SL500) to work with Win2K?

Why don't you try running it with the Virtual Machine and stuff. It'll be hard to find drivers for Win2K.

The 0x7B error means that the Boot Device is inaccessible, i.e. your HDD is probably in AHCI with the wrong drivers or you installed incompatible chipset drivers.

I can not get anything into the machine to run anything - no software at all, just a blank disk.
Earlier, I looked at the VMWare idea but it was all a bit daunting - I was not sure it would do what I wanted.

What should I use to get started - DOS?

You can run VMware in linux. I would suggest going with CentOS and then running the virtualization software from that.

Hit F1 go into bios and go to config -> serial and change that to compatability mode, then go to CPU and got to virtualization and enable, after that put the cd in your computer and save and restart bios. It should allow you to boot and complete the installation of windows you want, vista and windows 7 run with the ACPI setting, but xp and lower need to be set to compatibility mode. if you are trying to dual boot, you will need to have a vista restore disk or install disk to repair your computer start up, after that you need to download a program called Easy BCD, to re install vista's bootloader, and add an entry of your second operating system.

Currently im triple booting my SL500, i can run either xp, vista, or windows 7. In order to boot xp i need to go into bios and set the serial to compatibility mode, and then save a restart and select that operating system.

ALL operating systems are supported by lenovos website, only problem i have with windows 7 is my lenovo care and volume buttons do not work. other then that operates perfectly.
