Basically lets talk about gamming. Have you guys noticed a huge or slight fps increase from going from vista to win 7 or from xp to win 7? Whats your thoughts, is it worth upgrading from vista to win 7?
    Thanks mike

If you want the OS with least overhead for DX9 gaming, use XP. Otherwise you aren't going to see any serious increase or decrease by using either Vista or 7.

It's not suppose to count like this.
OK. For low-end or older GPUs, they're basically using DirectX 9.0 only.
It will be the best to use Windows XP to play games because Windows XP are good on DirectX 9 and Windows XP have less features(less resources) than Windows Vista/7.
While for newer machines and newer GPUs, they're all using DirectX 10.
Windows XP does not support DirectX 10, so, Windows Vista/7 are recommended because they support DirectX 10. For your info, the newer the DirectX, the higher the quality and performances.
Meanwhile, the latest DirectX is DirectX 11. Windows Vista and 7 support DirectX 11. However, there's a little GPUs support DirectX 11 currently.
    For example:
A DirectX 11 supported GPU can play a DirectX 11 supported games using DirectX 11 settings and advantages(higher quality and performance). However, it's still can play DirectX 10 and 9 supported games. But, it will use DirectX 10 or 9 settings to render the games.
Similarly, a ONLY DirectX 9 supported GPU can only play DirectX 9 supported Games. It can't open DirectX 10 or 11 featured Games.

It's not so much about Windows itself as it's DirectX and the GPUs as the above people said.

Basically, there have been benchmarks and there really isn't anything notably better if you're always using the same drivers and more importantly, the same DirectX mode. In DirectX 9 mode, there were no significant gains/losses when comparing XP, Vista and Windows 7 on a decently spec'ed machine(i.e. one comfortably above the minimum requirements to run the OS and the games tested).

If you're considering the switch to Windows 7 merely for gaming performance increases, save your money because it's not going to be anything groundbreaking for the most part. The reason you'd want Windows 7 on a laptop for gaming purposes would be perhaps in the future where Windows 7 based laptops with Dx11 GPUs start coming out later next year.

Seen big improvements, but only because Vista on my desktop and my laptop were as bloated as puffer fish.

Edit: Also because I was running 163.71 drivers in Vista for my 8600 GTS and now I'm running 195.62. :D

But this misleading information still roaming around heavily especially my hometown(kind of ancient). LOL.
They(PC shops) claim XP = Performance KING and GODLIKE. Brainless people? Because they never explore Vista/7 and they're all using 32bit Windows basically.
Plain stupid I will say. That's why I avoiding buying Hardwares from my place as they don't even know how's everything channeled or working.

it's the biggest problem microsoft faced after xp. not that vista is bad or something, but that people actually got used to have the same thing for a very long time, thus any change, anything new, by default, is bad.

and each time a new dx comes out, everyone cryes at it how it only works with newest hardware, how no game supports it, and how it's useless anyways. and it's always false, in the long term.

people just don't get, dx is for developers, not for end users. it makes life more easy to develop. dx10 is much better than dx9 in this regard, dx11 compared to dx10. and this will lead to enhanced performance and better running and looking etc games.

people like to hail what they know, and like to hate and fear what they don't, and mindlessly bash it. instead of getting it to know. how that can go wrong, in other situations, gets shown right now here in switzerland with the ban of minaretts :) it's strange, it's different: ATTACK IT :)
