I can't get Limewire to work. There seems to be a firewall blocking its attempts to communicate with my network. Windows firewall is off, McAfee is set to standard but with full access granted to Limewire, so I guess it's my router that's the problem. It's currently set to low, the setting just above off. I port-forwared for Limewire, and the firewall icon went away in the program, but still it didn't work. Any ideas?

And is there any other way of getting Limewire to work without creating a pinhole through my routers firewall? I'm not sure I want to do that, and besides, I didn't need to portforward Limewire on my old laptop, even when I was running a Norton firewall as well and granted Limewire access, and it worked just fine.

Try FrostWire. I know it works with Vista and it's as good as (and in many cases better than) Limewire anyways. It's not exactly a fix, but that's the best advice I can give.

Just bumping this bit. I'm concerned about giving people access to my network by overtly creating a pinhole for Limewire. Your thoughts?

Is there a way to hide your IP address, when using P2P programs, from all persons?

In Limewire you can go to advanced options and set up a proxy.

Without a proxy, no; anyone sending/receiving info to/from your computer can see your ip.

How do you set up a proxy then? Can somebody with knowledge leave detailed knowledge about how to bypass your routers firewall with Limewire and mask your IP and other settings from the world?

What is the difference between a blocker and hider? Can it also protect yourself from others (as far as knowing who you are ... hint hint im trying to mention a certain organization) from knowing who you are and stuff?

That's the whole purpose of peerguardian. Legitimate users will still be able to see your ip (you can't hide it from everyone, without rerouting your network traffic through a proxy server, since to send info from one computer to another, they need to know the ip address), but peerguardian has a blocklist of all known ip addresses owned by the music/movie/software companies (over 700 000 000 ips). It seems to do the job very well (I havn't gotten any warnings since I started using it), but it's not 100% fail-safe.
