I've been using VLC for years and it's been great as it has played 99% of my files without any issues, but this "building font cache" crap is driving me crazy now. I'm looking for something else. What does everyone else use? Preferably, I would like to avoid downloading a bunch of codecs.

    Thanks!

Why not download a good quality codec pack for your OS and use Windows Media Player by itself?
It amounts to the same thing.
VLC is essentially a player with a bunch of codecs inside of it.
WMP lacks codec packs, but is otherwise a VERY capable player (on par with everything else).

Though... I suppose that what you could pick from is the following:
    SPlayer
    GOM Player
    Daum Player

I'm using SPlayer myself and finding it VERY nice... though their website is PAINFULLY slow.

There's also Shark Codecs. I also heard someone mention Jetaudio. He said it had more codecs than VLC- not sure if he was blowing hot air.

Yep, Shark007 makes both the Vista Codec Pack and the Windows 7 Codec Pack. I've found that they both work better than VLC at playing files, particularly high-resolution HD files that require GPU-acceleration to play smoothly. With Shark007's codec packs, the GPU-acceleration worked out-of-the-box, with no configuration, unlike VLC.

    People still use VLC?

CCCP + MPC-HC (included) is all you need to watch anything.

EDIT: lol @ people recommending K-Lite Codec Pack. Wow.

Yeah... I have no idea why anyone would recommend Shark007...

When they can just install CCCP or just individually install Haali, MPC-HC and FFDShow Tryouts.

cccp is nice but I have too many novices screw up setting up the filters
and with a quick regstery patch it becomes a no brainer for running .MKV etc through media center lists and albums

cccp is so easy to set up with MPC. Just update Haali and use coreAVC if you can get your hands on it.

KMPlayer, been using it for years. Great for streaming music as well (even has audio and video capture functionality).

Same using it or years .. but now that it's sold looking at the new project of the original programmer .. daum potplayer in 32 and 64bit versions.
It's not there yet but will see.
KMplayer is so many years old and still outdoes most of today's players with builtin codecs, capture support, tv capture card support, internal conversion ...

    uh
you don't need to set up anything after it installs
the default settings will play anything in MPC-HC just fine

shark codec pack + media player and media center. i don't care about special players. once you start enjoying media center (on the real big screen with a remote), you never move back to all those special players. just use the windows default tools and extend them as needed.

I've used Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs for years... so I might be a little bias... however I love the thing, never any problems or incompatibility and always recommend it.

If you do give it a try as I know a lot of people have recommended it. Just uninstall any codec's, packs or tweaks to reduce any problems... This goes with any codec pack you try.

    Good luck

VLC player for me, I love the audio boost function, I liked KLM player but the video image quality is poor by comparison to VLC.

I like the fullscreen overscan feature of KLM player for playing 4:3 videos at 16:9, I wish VLC player had the option?
